Six things men can do to boost their fertility
Without healthy sperm, your chances of a successful pregnancy are much lower. Expert Dr Lynn Burmeister gives her top tips on how to increase your fertility.
Fertility
Don't miss out on the headlines from Fertility. Followed categories will be added to My News.
It sounds like common sense, but many people focus on a female’s health when trying to
conceive, and the male – who contributes 50 per cent to the baby – is forgotten.
Without healthy sperm, your chances of a successful pregnancy are much lower. But it’s
easy to boost sperm health with a few easy tips.
STRESS LESS
Stress is a huge contributor to sperm quality. If you’re consistently
stressed, the hormones responsible for producing sperm diminish, and sexual dysfunction
increases. Talk a walk after dinner or try five minutes of yoga to destress.
DITCH PLASTIC
The chemicals in plastics have been shown to act as hormone
disrupters, and we are learning more about the damaging effects of micro-plastics every day.
Swap your plastics for glass when storing food.
BUTT OUT
Smoking and vaping should be avoided when trying to conceive. We know that
the chemicals in cigarettes can affect the DNA of sperm, and we are still learning about the
negative impacts of vaping on fertility.
STAY COOL
My patients laugh when I tell them to stick an ice pack in their pants! But it’s
good advice. Increased temperatures down there can hamper sperm production. Steer clear
of spas and don’t wear tight undies if you’re trying to conceive.
EXERCISE
We all know the health benefits of exercise. But being overweight directly
contributes to reduced sperm movement and health. Just 30 minutes a day of activity is
enough to make a difference.
EAT NUTS
Brazil nuts are high in selenium, which is essential for sperm health. Eating just
two Brazil nuts a day is enough to boost those nutrient stores. Walnuts also pack a punch.
If you’re looking for an extra sperm boost, start including leafy greens, tomatoes and
pomegranates into your diet as well.
