MasterChef’s “quiet achiever” Emelia Jackson has described the show as a cauldron of intense competition, high pressure, rising temperatures and huge adrenaline rushes, garnished with a sprinkle of fear.
“The physical feeling (of being in the show’s kitchen) is like when you are on a rollercoaster and you get to the top and you have that split half second before you have that big drop where you freak out and regret everything,” Jackson said.
‘‘That is the feeling of it, this overwhelming, massive adrenaline rush. It really is like a cauldron, the pressure is on, everything is bubbling away.
“It is really hard to compare it to anything in your outside life.
“For me it is probably equivalent to driving a five-tier wedding cake to a venue that is two hours away in 45 degree heat.
“Every bump in the road just makes your heart jump into your throat.”
Melbourne-based Jackson said she had surprised herself by making the top five on the hit cooking show.
The queen of cakes said she had hoped, at best, to make the top 12.
“I genuinely never believed I would make it this far,” Jackson said.
“I have been making cakes for the past five years and I thought my experience was not going to be as relevant as everyone else’s.
“I have played a strategy. I just wanted to sit in the middle of the field and not be noticed until I found my feet. I think that is why people are referring to me as a dark horse, which I do not mind.”
Jackson said MasterChef had been a welcome distraction for her family who own the Peter Jackson menswear business.
“It has been really nice for us. My family is in retail and COVID has hit us really hard and it has just been a relief, a little bit of joy, for everyone,” she said.
Jackson, the last Victorian representative, is up against Reynold Poernomo, Callum Hann, Reece Hignell, and Laura Sharrad for a place in the top four tonight.
