Kylie Minogue and Jason Donovan’s return to Ramsay St was so tightly kept under wraps that most current Neighbours cast and crew weren’t aware when the superstars were filming their scenes.
The pair – who have reprised their roles as Scott and Charlene Robinson for the finale – managed to sneak into Erinsborough while production continued on as normal elsewhere.
“I didn’t see Jason and Kylie – none of us at the studio were even aware they were at Ramsay Street shooting – it was all very hush-hush,” Neighbours star Rebekah Elmaloglou said.
The actor – who’s notched up a decade playing Therese Willis on the iconic soap – was however, beyond excited to reunite with her former Home and Away love Guy Pearce.
The pair was among a handful of actors to star in both Australian institutions. In 1991, Pearce was David Croft in Summer Bay for about six weeks and had a romance with Elmaloglou’s character Sophie.
“It was really special seeing Guy especially after we played girlfriend and boyfriend on Home and Away,” she said.
“I had his baby – on screen.”
Elmaloglou revealed there was no rekindling of that romance.
“It was such a shame – I said to (executive producer) Jason Herbison ‘you should have put a scene with us together’,” she said.
“Both sets of fans would have loved it.”
The now Hollywood star was as down to earth as always.
“He was so wonderful – he was just walking around the studios and didn’t want any special treatment,” Elmaloglou said.
Elmaloglou dismissed the initial reports the iconic soap was cancelled, thinking it was a hoax.
Even as Australia’s longest-running drama heads into its final fortnight on our screens she’s still coming to terms with its demise.
“It’s just such an iconic show and an incredible platform for people to go and do great things,” she said.
“I’m not just talking about the cast, if you knew the all the crew who started off as runners and are now producing.
“We were all in denial for so long and really believed someone would sweep us off our feet.”
The only silver lining being writers could give the soap a fitting farewell after close to four decades on our televisions.
While Elmaloglou can’t reveal too much about the remaining episodes, she hints all is not lost for a reconciliation between Therese and her long-time love the nefarious Paul Robinson, played by Stefan Dennis.
“Let’s just put it this way – there’s not a lot of time,” she said.
“If there’s a reconciliation it will have to be pretty bloody quick.
“Paul is the love of her life and I can’t imagine them going their separate ways.”
Elmaloglou added Dennis is also the love of her life – after her real-life husband Kane and son Kai.
“I adore working with Stef, we’ve always got along so well,” she said.
“He’s one of the biggest things I’m going to miss. I don’t think I’ll ever be able to get a working relationship like I’ve had with him.”
For now Elmaloglou’s content to be enjoy downtime at home, but she’s putting together audition tapes and hopes she can live out her long-held dream of playing a Detective.
“I’m obsessed with (Law and Order SVU actor) Mariska Hargitay and I’ve always wanted to play a cop,” she said.
