TV glamour girl nowhere to be seen in modern television

They were once a staple of game and quiz shows across the world but now the TV glamour girl has disappeared from screens.

Are we watching the death of the TV glamour girl?

For decades television, particularly in the space of game, quiz and variety shows, has celebrated the role of the dazzling co-host, usually a striking young woman, beautifully dressed who commanded attention.

Prize or gift presenters, such as Deal or No Deal dealettes and The Price Is Right models, were also coveted roles that resulted in profiles being raised and career opportunities being furthered.

Nicky Buckley, Jo Silvagni (formerly Bailey) and Karina Brown became national stars as the co-host of Sale of the Century. Adriana Xenides and Sophie Faulkner added style to Wheel of Fortune, Sarita Holland and Danielle King turned their profile as models on The Price Is Right into business opportunities, and Livinia Nixon and Jo Beth Taylor got huge opportunities through Hey Hey It’s Saturday.

Panda Listner arguably created the template for the TV show hostess as Graham Kennedy’s “barrel girl” on In Melbourne Tonight. Such was her popularity, Listner shared the first Gold Logie with Kennedy in 1959.

But it seems like we are watching the end of the era of the TV glamour girl. Has beauty become a bad thing?

When Deal or No Deal relaunches on Channel 10 on Monday, the show’s famous dealettes will be extinct. The dealettes, a model squad, used to open the briefcases on the show. In its new iteration audience members and relatives of the contestants will open the cases.

Internationally Meghan Markle was Deal’s most famous dealette.

Ten is also bringing back Wheel of Fortune with UK identity Graham Norton hosting. If, as expected, the Australian version mirrors the British version that Norton also helms, there is no female co-host spinning the letters. That role has gone digital.

One of the original Australian “dealettes” Rosanna Faraci said she was stunned that the show had dumped its model squad.

“I am mortified,” the Melbourne photographer and model said.

“It added glamour and fun to the show and gave it a whole vibe.

“I understand we are moving forward in society, but there are certain things that don’t need to be changed. We did not feel objectified in any way shape or form. It was a great job. “Twenty seven girls, we all worked together and it was a happy era. Now everything is so politically correct everyone looks miserable.”

Deal host Grant Denyer said in October getting rid of the glam squad (or Meghan Markle sparkle) was going to make the show more “luxe” and “upscale.”
