Time On: Fake Tom Browne X account fools Sam Newman

Sam Newman is the latest victim of a fake footy X account, falling for a conspiracy theory involving Mason Cox and the US election.

What do you get if you cross Sam Neman, a fake Tom Browne and a Mason Cox conspiracy theory?
What do you get if you cross Sam Neman, a fake Tom Browne and a Mason Cox conspiracy theory?

Time On is your wrap-up of all the footy media gossip and banter.

A fake Tom Browne social media account has claimed another victim — Sam Newman.

Using the name and picture of the former Channel 7 footy reporter — despite Browne leaving the media last year — the fake X account’s bio reads “Not actually Tom Browne”.

The account often makes outrageous, mischievous and blatantly incorrect statements, but none of this prevents people getting sucked in.

On Wednesday it posted: “Breaking: Collingwood have been accepting payments from the US government to keep Mason Cox in the best 22 to increase his relevancy, so when he endorses Biden at the next election it has the potential to swing the election.”

Footy legend Newman, a long-time Joe Biden critic, re-posted and responded:

Many users were quick to point out that Newman was having a conversation with a parody account, including the actual account which posted the list of victims who have fallen into the same trap.

Newman is on his yacht having set sail for the Whitsundays while raising awareness for RULE prostate cancer.

Markov makes his choice

Collingwood premiership defender Oleg Markov says he will miss a game for the birth of his first child.

Markov and partner Becky Kay are expecting a son at the end of July.

“Becky’s due date falls on a day off so fingers crossed he arrives then,’’ Markov said.

“I wouldn’t want to miss the birth of my first child that’s for sure. Fly (coach Craig McRae), he’s been really good and given me a lot of confidence. He was one of the first to know we were expecting and he’s very proud and excited.”

Markov missed the game two rounds ago to attend the wedding of his partner’s brother.

“It’s an incredible environment Fly has created and we had a plan early in the pre-season and he was fully supportive,’’ Markov said.

“Hopefully you only get married once and it was an honour to attend.”

Markov is drawing inspiration from teammate Jack Crisp ahead of his journey to fatherhood.

Midfield star Crisp, a father of three, has already passed on some advice.

“It’s pretty cool at the football club, we’ve got a lot of fathers and I’ve had a chat with just about every one,’’ Crisp said.

Markov and Crisp had fun for International Donut Day with special Collingwood treats by Daniel’s Donuts who represent all 18 teams in the range.

Bucks wants Tassie if synergy is right

Former Collingwood coach Nathan Buckley has officially shown interest in coaching the AFL’s new Tasmania team.

“I have interest in what that organisation is going to look like and how it’s going to come together,’’ Buckley said on Fox Footy’s On The Couch.

“If there’s 100 steps I haven’t even taken step one to understand it.”

When pressed further by Garry Lyon and fill-in panellist Jason Dunstall, Buckley admitted he was keen to know more about the AFL’s 19th team which is entering the competition in 2028.

“It’s something that I would like to have a look at and learn more about, to understand whether or not there was a synergy there that was for the club’s benefit,’’ he said.

Buckley added he hadn’t had a discussion yet with the incoming chief Brendon Gale.

Former Saints champion Nick Riewoldt endorsed Buckley for the top job last week.

McKay on McKay

Thanks to a rumour fanned by Billy Brownless, some believed Ben and Harry McKay were the same person.

Now they are finally preparing to share the field when Carlton takes on Essendon on Sunday.

The twins have a podcast and they had received an interesting message from Michael of Carlton North.

“I’m that excited about it, both teams are going really well at the moment,’’ Michael said.

“I have a quick question for Ben: I love the tactical side of the game, I was wondering if you could tell me the exact game plan for the Bombers.

“I think everyone would find that really interesting, especially me. Go Baggers.”

Turns out the voice sounded very familiar — it was Carlton coach Michael Voss.

Tony Jones cops a Currie take-down

Tony Jones was the victim of a send-up of epic proportions by a colleague on the Sunday Footy Show.

Nine reporter Nathan Currie did a live cross to the panel from Geelong’s fundraising slide for MND.

He bravely donned a toupee, fake teeth and cradled a bucket of KFC in tribute to Jones’ infamous chicken-eating escapades in a food court, which were caught on film.

He even went there — mentioning the infamous Bec Judd rejection Jones copped when they were news colleagues.

“It looks like it’s going to be colder than the shoulder Bec Judd gave you Tony,’’ Currie said.

Nine’s social channels posted: “We hold genuine fears for 9News reporter Nathan Currie after this unreal take-down of TJ”.

Nine News chief Hugh Nailon joined the pile-on, posting on X: “Nothing to fear, Nathan Currie is very secure (at Nine) — in fact this will only enhance his career”.

Unsurprisingly, Jones was the only one left unimpressed by the segment.

“Hopefully I’m still your favourite, Nath,’’ Currie said when throwing back to Jones.

“Yeah, you won’t be working here,’’ Jones bluntly suggested.

Jones later said: “That reference alone (to Bec Judd) guarantees he’ll be getting all the crappy jobs for a while”.

But Jones did see the lighter side, telling Time On Monday that he thought it was hilarious.

“I thought it was one of the funniest things I’ve seen … and had I not been on the receiving end of Nathan’s roast I would’ve found it funnier! We sometimes, in the football media, take ourselves too seriously … so, good on him.”

It was an eventful show for Jones who also put his body and pride on the line in backing premiers Collingwood to make the top eight.

“If they don’t (make it) I will wash windows on Punt Rd for two hours,’’ Jones said.

“If Collingwood do not make the finals I will be there with my squeegee and bucket on Punt Rd and wash car windows.”

Jones was responding to fellow panellist Matthew Lloyd’s take on Collingwood.

“I don’t think they can win it and it’s a 50/50 whether they make it,’’ Lloyd said.

Baby Checkers on the way

Collingwood premiership forward Brody Mihocek and partner Polly Frankcombe are expecting their first child.

The couple announced the happy news on Sunday night.

“Baby Checkers, due October 2024,’’ they captioned a picture on Instagram, along with a blue love heart and baby emoji.

They were inundated with congratulations from Mihocek’s Magpies teammates and partners.

Also with some baby news was Port Adelaide captain Connor Rozee who welcomed a baby girl named Audrey with fiance Maisie Packer.

“We couldn’t love you more,’’ the couple posted on social media.

Dusty in socials snap

Dustin Martin has bobbed up on social media ahead of his 300th game.

Martin appeared in a happy snap posted by Collingwood legend Dane Swan, watching the UFC on Sunday with a group of friends at the Union Hotel in Windsor, a venue which Swan co-owns.

Meanwhile, some Collingwood players were out and about on Saturday night at The Osborne in South Yarra celebrating Tom Mitchell’s birthday.

NBA basketballer Josh Giddey, a good friend of Mitchell’s, was also spotted among the revellers.

Dale Thomas makes a Reserves comeback

Dale Thomas was still feeling good about pulling on the boots again.

The Collingwood premiership hero wound back the clock with an amazing speccie and a goal in a Division 12 Reserves game for amateur club, the Wattle Park Animals.

“Sore as a boil, I can hardly move,’’ Thomas said on Triple M’s Sunday Rub.

“I landed like a butterfly with sore feet, took two bounces and laced out old knackers in the forward line, the only target that was hit all night.”

Thomas, 36, stopped midgame to do a “shoey” and had a sausage in bread handed to him by a runner.

“Honestly I looked like a python after a meal in that jumper so there wasn’t too many getting two hands around me,’’ Thomas said when asked if he got tackled.

Balta’s unusual benchside bring

Richmond defender Noah Balta wins the award for most unusual thing to bring to the bench.

He was caught on camera Saturday night with a pen and a notebook, appearing to write down some thoughts.

Coach Adem Yze gave a humorous response when asked about it post-match in Geelong.

“I couldn’t read his writing!” he said.
