Time On: Richo won’t take Smokie’s cold sledge sitting down
Everyone has an opinion about footy commentators but one journo missed the mark when he took aim at Matthew Richardson — and the former Tigers great bit back.

Time On is your Monday wrap-up of all the footy gossip and banter from the weekend.
Everyone has an opinion about commentators — just ask Tom Browne and Marc McGowan.
It was Brian Taylor’s commentary that sparked a war of words between those journos a few weeks ago.
On Friday night it wasn’t the revered commentator Graham ‘Smokey’ Dawson as we originally thought, but the Footy Almanac’s Smokie Dawson who targeted another on Twitter.
He missed the mark when he took aim at Richmond great and Channel 7’s Matthew Richardson.
Some agreed and some disagreed with his take, but Dawson certainly didn’t mince words.
Now a contributor and editor of the Footy Almanac website, he tweeted: “Matthew Richardson seems to be a lovely fella. But if he is the best we can do in regards to “special comments” then Ch7’s licence should be revoked #AFL”.
Richardson could have ignored the swipe but he responded: “Thanks for the feedback Smokie, enjoy your weekend. Hope 7 don’t lose their license though as I might have to hit up Footy Almanac for an (sic) football analyst role.” The tweet ended with a thumbs up emoji.
Dawson conceded: “A fair call.”
Swanny reveals easiest opponent
Dane Swan has been doing the rounds as he normally does ahead of the big Anzac Day match.
The Collingwood great didn’t hesitate when asked on The Front Bar who his easiest opponent was — Kane Cornes.
Sounding a little antagonistic, he was asked about it again on Triple M’s Saturday Rub.
“I’m just an honest man,’’ Swan said. “It was all a bit of fun, but I wasn’t lying.”
He added: “He wasn’t very quick so that was the one thing and I was a bit taller and could go forward. I was licking my lips just waiting for a ball to come in. He’d quickly get out of there and scoot up the ground and try to get a bit of his own ball when I drifted forward.”
In good news for Pies fans, the Brownlow medallist said he genuinely believes Nick Daicos can win the Brownlow and could win multiple medals through his career.
Geelong great returns to glory
Joel Selwood unfurled the premiership flag at home in Geelong on Saturday night and the retired premiership captain is still the club’s biggest supporter.
He and Tom Hawkins gave diehard Saints fan Lindsay Fox a Geelong membership on the occasion of his 86th birthday last week. The Cats greats walked into the trucking magnate’s celebration at the NGV carrying a cardboard box. Selwood said they formed a relationship through Geelong’s late president Frank Costa.
“He could go and do anything in the world and have the most fun that he wants, he just wanted to spend it with a group of guys in a hall at the end of the day,’’ Selwood said. “Funny how it works isn’t it.”
A father’s love – minus the support
There was some gold on Channel 7’s Roaming Brian Friday night with Brian Taylor catching up with Aaron Naughton’s father Wayne in the rooms.
It wasn’t hard to tell they were related — the pair sport matching mullet hair dos.
Interestingly Wayne said he isn’t a Bulldogs supporter but an avid Collingwood fan.
He said his favourite player is Jamie Elliott. A Pies legend himself, BT was rather amused by the confession.
Lobb’s sweet taste of success
Rory Lobb enjoyed the sweet taste of success against his old side.
The tensions between Lobb and the Dockers were pointedly captured by the local Restump Podcast team who joined with Midvale’s Dingo Brewery to create a Lobster Tears beer, describing it as slightly salty raspberry sour.
It was a backhanded tribute to Lobb upon his return to WA that ended up splashing them in the face.
“Mmm tasty stuff” the Western Bulldogs captioned their Instagram picture of Lobb holding the can. Lobb was a good sport, even appearing on TikTok with his partner Lexi Mary, taste-testing the brew.
The podcast ate humble pie on Sunday, tweeting that it was time to put the beer to bed and move on.
Embattled Morris makes his return
Tom Morris was in the host’s chair on Sunday, stepping up to host Crunch Time on SEN in place of the newly married Sarah Olle.
Morris has settled back well into the media, and was joined by Cal Twomey and Josh Jenkins.
“Shame the Swans couldn’t deliver for her on her wedding weekend,’’ Morris said of Olle who tied the knot on Friday.
