ALL OF THE CLUES

Fans have been speculating since before The Masked Singer aired that Simpson was underneath the robot’s mask when Channel 10 released a bunch of telling hints about who the celebrities appearing on the show could be.

The clues for the robot matched plenty of aspects of Simpson’s life, including:

• “I was created by the digital age” — Simpson was discovered via YouTube, where he uploaded his own covers of popular songs.

• The Robot’s shown picking up plastic out of water and putting it into a bag with “UN” written on it — In 2017, Simpson was named the first United Nations advocate for oceans.

• “I’ve always been connected to the water” — Simpson won two gold medals at the 2009 Queensland Swimming Championships.

• “Growing up, I was surrounded by gold” — Simpson was born on the Gold Coast.

• “When I was younger, my favourite animal was the butterfly, but now I prefer something that goes tweet” — The first animal is a nod to his swimming background, the second, his whopping 7.3 million Twitter followers.

As the competition progressed, further clues released only strengthened the case for Simpson being the robot.

• “I headed East like a moth to a flame, but I soon realised others were controlling my program. I felt like such a clone! So I short-circuited the production line and I’m now very much my own robot.” — Simpson was quick to move to America after gaining fame in Australia, but in 2014, left Atlantic Records, saying, “I’m an independent artist … working on my first true solo album.”

It’s Simpson’s current physical whereabouts, however, that have seemingly confirmed his identity, with the Aussie singing sensation arriving back on home soil today.

Whoever is revealed as the show’s winner will likely do the local publicity rounds across radio and TV tomorrow — which would explain why Simpson has flown in from his base in LA.

HOW HE FOUND FAME

Hailing from Queensland’s Gold Coast, Simpson was dubbed as Australia’s answer to Justin Bieber when his Justin Timberlake YouTube covers were discovered by Grammy-award winning producer, Shawn Campbell when he was only 12.

The baby-faced pop wannabe was signed by US label Atlantic Records on his 13th birthday, telling Stellar in 2017 that scoring such a big break at an early age was thanks to his extroverted and dedicated nature.

“I’ve really stuck my neck out as much as possible. Even when I was growing up, I was a competitive swimmer until I moved here (to the US). I always just tried to take risks and it’s still a philosophy I keep.”

After relocating with his family to Los Angeles, Simpson released his debut single iYiYi, featuring American rapper Flo Rida, on May 15, 2010.

While he never reached the same hysteric fame as Bieber, Simpson has achieved plenty of success in the competitive music industry, with hits like Pretty Brown Eyes, Surfboard, Not Just You and Flower.

His second album Surfers Paradise debuted at number 10 on the Billboard 200 chart in 2013, and a year later he collaborated with Bieber — who he also toured with — on the single Home to Mama, which has been streamed more than 100 million times.

In August 2014, Simpson announced that he had departed Atlantic Records, with the hope of escaping the cookie-cutter mould of pop music and pursuing a different sound with more creative freedom.

He started his own label, Coast House Records, and released his first independent album, fittingly named Free, in 2015.

“There’s a lot of content on there about breaking free and just developing your own philosophies, and ideologies, or world views or whatever,” he told Du Jourof the album in a 2015 interview.

In 2017, Simpson formed the short-lived band Tide, releasing their debut single Waiting for the Tide through Simpson’s personal label.

With songs about love, unity, environmentalism and ocean conservation, the three-piece band broke up this year, with Simpson turning his attention back to his solo career.

Inspired by his high-profile new romance with Miley Cyrus, Simpson released a new single, Golden Thing, on October 19.

He’s also made a string of acting cameos on sitcoms like Cougar Town and Instant Mom, and in October 2018 made his theatre debut when he was cast as lead character Dmitry in the Broadway musical Anastasia.

RELATIONSHIPS

Simpson made headlines earlier this month when he was spotted canoodling with Miley Cyrus in a Los Angeles grocery store.

Cyrus — one of the world’s most talked-about women — separated from husband, Australian actor Liam Hemsworth, earlier this year after a decade-long relationship.

Her budding romance with Simpson has been well-documented on the couples’ social media accounts.

From Simpson serenading Cyrus when she was hospitalised with tonsillitis to risqué Instagram photos, the pair haven’t been shy about their new relationship.

Simpson has had a soft spot for Cyrus for a long time — in a resurfaced video from 2012, he spoke about her being his ultimate celebrity crush.

“I knew all the words to her songs, I’m not gonna lie,” he said in the video.

“I’m not ashamed about it at all. I was a big Miley Cyrus fan and I think she will forever be the most date-able Disney star.”

Cyrus isn’t the first famous blonde to steal Simpson’s heart — in 2013, he began dating American model, Gigi Hadid.

The highly-publicised relationship ended in 2015, with Simpson telling Du Jour that the split was a “mutual decision.”

“I love my ex-girlfriend, I always will,” Simpson said.

“It was an amicable, mutual decision, and we still talk every now and then, but the highly publicised thing made me uncomfortable. Going out to dinner and there being all this paparazzi and stuff … as soon as we split I had the realisation that I was straying away from who I was as a whole person.”

Simpson said in the interview that he just wanted to keep it “low key” and focus on his music.

There were also rumours in 2011 that he was linked to Kylie Jenner.
