Kim Cattrall is returning to play the role of Samantha in one scene of the second season of Sex and the City spin-off And Just Like That.
The move has shocked fans of the landmark series due to the ongoing feud between Cattrall and Sarah Jessica Parker, the show’s star and executive producer.
Cattrall, who has previously spoken of the pair’s long-held tensions, shot her dialogue without speaking to or seeing the rest of the cast, according to Variety.
The new scene will see Cattrall have a phone conversation with Parker, according to reports.
Cattrall was not asked to be part of the first season of the new series, which screened on Foxtel.
It came after Cattrall, one of the four principal Sex and the City stars, refused to reprise the character of Samantha for a third film which was consequently cancelled.
In the first season of And Just Like That, Cattrall’s character had moved to London and was keeping her distance from her friends in Manhattan after an argument.
The Variety report also suggested that Cattrall was dressed by Sex and the City costume designer Patricia Field, famed for her iconic fashion looks, for the new scene.
Field did not take part in the first season of And Just Like That due to a scheduling clash with her work on Netflix’s Emily in Paris.
In a June 2022 interview on the THR podcast, Parker reflected on why Cattrall was not asked to be part of the first season of And Just Like That.
“I’ve spent a lot of years working really hard to always be decent to everybody on the set, to take care of people, to be responsible to and for people, both my employers and the people that I feel I’m responsible for as a producer of the show,” Parker said.
“And there just isn’t anyone else who’s ever talked about me this way.”
Cattrall told Variety in 2022: “It’s a great wisdom to know when enough is enough.
“I also didn’t want to compromise what the show was to me. The way forward seemed clear.”
In February 2018, Cattrall called Parker “cruel” after the star gave Cattrall condolences following the death of her brother.
“You are not my family,” Cattrall wrote in a scathing post directed at Parker.
“You are not my friend. So I’m writing to tell you one last time to stop exploiting our tragedy in order to restore your ‘nice girl’ persona.”
In 2017, Cattrall told Piers Morgan that she and Parker had a “toxic relationship” and that she “could have been nicer” about her decision to not return to the franchise for a third film.
“We’ve never been friends. We’ve been colleagues and in some ways it’s a very healthy place to be because then you have a clear line between your professional life and relationship and your personal,” Cattrall said.
