WE’VE seen plenty of scantily clad men on Australian Ninja Warrior before, but we’ve never seen someone try to conquer the obstacles in a pair of undies worth $25,000.
But that’s exactly what Jacob Woodhouse from NSW will do on Sunday night’s episode of the Channel 9 show.
The 26-year-old construction manager is also an underwear model for AussieBum and ahead of his appearance on the show he called the underwear company’s owner and asked for a favour.
“He rings up ever so coyly and says, ‘Do you reckon I could wear those gold undies because they want something a bit different?’” AussieBum founder Sean Ashby told news.com.au.
“We thought about it for a few days … we were worried it could look a bit ostentatious but we thought, stuff it, it could be a bit of fun.”
So what’s the deal with the $25,000 jocks?
“The inspiration came from Harrods which has the world’s most expensive bra,” Mr Ashby said.
AussieBum is sold in Selfridges in London and when Ashby was having a meeting with department store executives, someone came up with the crazy idea to make the world’s most expensive pair of men’s underwear.
“We found a company in Germany who was developing a yarn that was constructed of 24-carat gold but also elastin so it could stretch,” Mr Ashby said.
“And we found a company in Queensland that produce fabrics for the Australian Defence Force and over the next 12 months we set about developing this fabric which was the first of its kind.”
Only a handful of pairs of the gold undies were made and there are no plans to manufacture any more, Mr Ashby told news.com.au.
“We made pairs for Selfridges which they have on display and also for three very unique customers (two are from Europe and the other is from Dubai).”
The jocks that Woodhouse wears on Australian Ninja Warrior are actually the prototype pair and Mr Ashby said he hasn’t seen them since.
“It’s funny you should say that … I’m actually trying to chase him up to make sure he hasn’t melted them down!” he said.
“I’m not that fussed, as weird as it sounds. I’m not going to wear them.”
Woodhouse, who played rugby for 12 years, will be seen on Sunday night’s episode of Ninja Warrior on Channel 9 at 7pm.
