SAM Newman says Eddie McGuire deserves to be the highest paid person on Australian television.
“Absolutely, he’s a star, whether you like Eddie or not is irrelevant, he’s a star,’’ Newman told the Sacked: Showbiz podcast.
“I’ve had 30 years experience of seeing that man stand in front of a television camera.
“With no rehearsal, no cue cards, no autocue, no nothing, just do it live down the barrel.
“He’s a star and people love to knock him because he’s successful.
“I’ve had my disagreements with Eddie about how things should operate and how we should go about doing things but that doesn’t diminish my admiration and respect for him as a broadcaster. He is world class.”
Newman, 74, said he and McGuire, who turned 55 on Thursday, first bonded when they went out clubbing to Tok H.
“He was a young stripling working for might have been Channel 10 in those days,’’ Newman said.
“Eddie was at a function we’d been at and a few of the footballers, I can’t remember who they were, contemporaries of mine and we walked across the road to the Tok H hotel and we went into the disco in those days.
“We had a few drinks and that’s the first time I got to know Eddie and the second time was when Ian Johnson said this is Trevor Marmalade and this is Eddie and would you like to be on a six month trial doing The Footy Show.”
