A prominent Melbourne rabbi has been spotted on the set of new comedy Ricky Stanicky, starring John Cena and Zac Efron – and he’s not just there to meet the celebs.

The star-studded film, which is currently being filmed in Melbourne’s leafy eastern suburbs, is centred around a group of friends who invent imaginary character, Ricky Stanicky – played by former wrestler John Cena – to use as a scapegoat for their misbehaviour.

Ex-Disney star Zac Efron, who praised Melbourne this week, saying he’d rather “shoot things for the rest of my life here”, is joined by stars Jermaine Fowler, William H. Macy, Anja Savcic, Andrew Santino and Lex Scott Davis, in the highly anticipated film, directed by Peter Farrelly (Green Book).

On Thursday, one of our own names headed out to the set to assist the US actors, religious leader, Rabbi Gabi Kaltmann.

The well-known Melbourne rabbi was seen rubbing shoulders with the Hollywood stars, snapping a photo with Cena, as well as US comedians Jeff Ross and Andrew Santino.

The Herald Sun understands Rabbi Kaltmann, from the ARK Centre synagogue in Hawthorn, was recruited by producers some months ago to ensure the more outrageous scenes about Jewish traditions are Kosher (as Kosher as they can be).

The scenes include the accidental drugging of a rabbi and chaotic attempts to stop a rabbi performing a circumcision under the influence.

While Rabbi Gabi was tight lipped about what occurred on set on Thursday, he told the Herald Sun it was “a pleasure” to meet the cast, especially Jewish comedian, Jeffrey Ross.

“It was a pleasure working with my proud Jewish brother, roastmaster general, Jeff Ross,” he said.

“Meeting the cast was fantastic.”
