The expectant wife of Essendon football club captain Zach Merrett is hitting back at “cruel” trolls who mercilessly take aim at WAGs walking the red carpet at football’s night of nights.
Alexandra Merrett, who announced earlier this month announced the couple were expecting their first child, shared her thoughts on the nasty online pile-ons while giving a glimpse at the making of her frock for this year’s Brownlow.
“For those who don’t know, every single year, I think five or six players get invited,” Merrett, who’s set to launch a new luggage brand in coming months, said to her followers.
“Unless you are the captain or you have previously won a Brownlow, you do not find out that you are going until the Home and Away season has ended.
“This is why I find it so interesting when people are so cruel about the way everyone looks on the night because some of these women have two weeks to pull together an entire outfit.”
In the almost two-minute clip shared to TikTok, the stunning brunette mingled with stylist Maggie Smith and designer Sonia Cappellazzo to discuss silhouettes and tones.
Cappellazzo designed the expectant mum’s sleek ivory gown with shoulder detailing for last year’s big night.
Merrett said the fashionable trio held off on designing her gown for September’s affair due to her growing belly, but wanted to opt for something a “little softer, a little more feminine”.
“Normally I would be a little bit more organised than this but obviously with my growing bump we wanted to give it a bit more time just to wait and see what my body was going to do.”
“It’s only six weeks away, it’s going to come around really quickly!”
