Spare a thought for radio titan John Burns, who signs off next week.

Dubbed Sir Lunchalot for his famous long lunches, Burnso won’t even be getting that thanks to the coronavirus horror show.

The original plan was for Burnso to retire with much fanfare while broadcasting from Tokyo for the Olympics.

We all know how that ended, with overseas travel shelved for the foreseeable future.

A little sweetener in the form of a junket was then devised for the radio veterans to broadcast from Mt Buller for the week.

But that too has ended up on the scrapheap.

It was also to coincide with his 75th birthday as adman Russel Howcroft joins Ross Stevenson from Monday, August 3.

Now even lunch is off the menu. Say it’s not so!
Word is Burnso’s great and eternal champion, 3AW station manager Stephen Beers is now resorting to organising a post-show breakfast, socially distanced of course, at the Docklands studio for when he hangs up the microphone on Friday. Ho-hum.
