3AW breakfast king John Burns to step down next year

Just months after declaring he wouldn’t be leaving his top-rating breakfast show voluntarily, morning radio king John Burns has announced 2020 will be his last with long-time on-air partner Ross Stevenson.

There will be change to 3AW’s top-rating breakfast juggernaut from next August.

The hit Ross and John show, which has claimed 144 straight breakfast radio surveys, will be no more from July 31.

Despite stepping down from his popular breakfast gig with Ross Stevenson, John Burns says he will stay involved at the station.

It comes just months after Burns declared he was “prepared to work on forever”.

“I won’t be doing that voluntarily,” he told the Herald Sun in September, of rumours he might hang up the mic next year. “Whatever decision is made about my future it won’t be me making it.

“I want to be here forever and whatever decision is to be made to end my career — it won’t be mine.”

The former lawyer announced the changing of the guard on-air this morning.

He said the end of 3AW’s Tokyo 2020 Olympics broadcast would be a “really good time” to step down.

3AW station manager Stephen Beers said Ross and John were a “Melbourne institution”.

“Next year the pair will celebrate an incredible 20th year as an on-air partnership. This is a stunning achievement in any field and even more remarkable in the world of broadcast radio,” Beers said.

“We’re thrilled that Burnso has agreed to jump in the studio chair for one more year and we look forward to giving him a fitting send-off when the Olympics wrap up.”

A decision on Burns’ replacement will be announced next year.
