Former ABC breakfast radio host Red Symons is set to take over 3AW star Neil Mitchell’s top-rating show.
“Think of it as lending a car to a friend, Neil,” Symons said on 3AW today.
“You’ll come back after a week; maybe there will be a scratch on the car, a flat tyre, and it’s in The Dandenongs where I left it.”
Symons will fill in for Mitchell between Christmas and New Year.
“I’m not leaving, which will disappoint people,” Mitchell said.
“For one week, in the chair, 8.30am to midday, Red Symons, former ABC breakfast presenter, former Hey Hey star, former guitarist, massive genius, eccentric broadcaster …
“I thought given the ABC is dumping the people they put in to replace Red two years ago, it was time to announce this.”
Mitchell added: “Red, all by himself, with a microphone, for a week. Good luck to all of us.”
Mitchell then crossed to Symons.
“Yes officer, I know I’m using a phone while in a car,” Symons said.
“But you have to understand I’m talking to Neil Mitchell, friend of the force, no fear or favour.”
The ABC last week axed breakfast radio duo Sami Shah and Jacinta Parsons who struggled to maintain solid ratings. They replaced Symons two years ago.
They will be replaced by broadcaster and comedian Sammy J.
Tony Jones and Heidi Murphy will also fill in for Mitchell during the summer holiday period.
