Sydney thinks it rules the airwaves, but old school Melbourne is digging in its heels.

The rumour mill said the so-called puppetmasters were about to drop the guillotine on some of Melbourne’s favourite 3AW stalwarts.

Everyone from taxi drivers to radio rivals were talking about contracts being broken or not renewed.

But it’s all white noise, says 3AW boss Stephen Beers who set the record straight with Page 13.

Denis Walter leaving for Steve Price’s afternoon show to go national? Not here, says Beers.

“As Ross Stevenson says, Melbourne and Sydney are not different cities, they are different countries.”

Page 13 hears a contract of more than one year is about to be signed by Walter, as well as Tom Elliott.

Meanwhile, Neil Mitchell isn’t going anywhere either.

“He’s at the height of his powers” says Beers, swatting Eddie McGuire firing off a few pot shots at Mitchell over on FM.

“We like Eddie giving us free promos each morning,” Beers quipped.

The 3AW Breakfast Show with more than 100 No.1 rating performances with Ross and John is still in discussion.

John Burns is much loved in the Melbourne market and he told Page 13 he wouldn’t be leaving of his own accord.

Now we hear a further contract may be tabled, perhaps over a meal with Sir Lunch-a-lot as it has been in past years.

“We are a tight family,” Beers said.
