Where will the Brownlow Medal be held this year?
It’s been an unprecedented 2020 AFL season that’s seen our footy players leave the state. And it looks like the Brownlow Medal is making a move out of Melbourne too, with its potential new location a surprise.

Footy’s night of nights could go from a ‘red carpet’ to ‘red dirt’ in options being considered for the reimagined Brownlow Medal.
During this year’s unprecedented season, which has seen all Victorian clubs enter interstate hubs, it is looking more likely the glamour marquee event will be moved from Melbourne to a location interstate or in Victoria.
One option being considered by Channel 7 and the AFL is to stage October’s Brownlow in Uluru, like the spectacular Sounds of Silence dinner at the foot of Ayers Rock in the Northern Territory
Channel 7’s Melbourne managing director Lewis Martin said Uluru was an option, as was supporting Victorian tourism with a Brownlow at Hanging Rock or the Grampians.
He said during this season anything was possible, with talk already emerging of a Grand Final being played interstate.
“Could the AFL grand final be anywhere, yes it could,’’ Martin told Page 13.
“Could the Brownlow be at the foot of Uluru, like a sounds of silence dinner. Yes it could. “That’s what I love about this year, you can really reimagine a whole range of fixtures. No idea is a crazy idea.
“Or could it be somewhere like the Grampians where we go to regional Victoria.
“I love the idea of the Brownlow, if it can’t be held in a metropolitan area, do you go somewhere like a regional location in Victoria. Or do we go red dirt and somewhere like Uluru.
“Any concept for the Brownlow is being considered.”
Martin said there was no thought of downgrading the night to celebrate the league’s best and fairest player, just staging it somewhere that would benefit the game, tourism, the community and fans nationwide.
“Both Channel 7 and the AFL agree, let’s reimagine the Brownlow and let’s deliver a Brownlow Medal that sure, reflects the conditions, but that doesn’t mean it will be any less than what the Brownlow has been,’’ he said.
“It would be really cool to have Hamish (McLachlan) hosting at Uluru or Hanging Rock or the Grampians. It would be phenomenal I think.
“We’re learnt to become agile and we’ll be supporting the AFL. The safest and best location for the Brownlow, we’ll be able to pivot and arrange it.
“We are working hand in glove with the AFL, as are FOX. If they want to say let’s do it in Uluru and everyone arrives in bare feet that would be great.
“What a welcome to country that would be.”
Only once has the Brownlow Medal been staged out of Melbourne – in Sydney in 1999 when Hawthorn’s Shane Crawford took ‘Charlie’ home.
