Wayne Carey’s former fiancée Kate Neilson hits out at ‘insulting’ claims

Wayne Carey’s former fiancée Kate Neilson has hit out at his “lies” over a notorious glassing incident and says she’s insulted at his claim she was nothing more than a “girl that I was seeing on and off”.

Wayne Carey’s ex-fiancée Kate Neilson has accused him of changing his story again after his latest claims relating to their history and a glassing incident in Miami in 2007.

Neilson said Carey’s comments were “all lies” and it was “insulting” to say he wouldn’t call her a girlfriend.

He recounted the highly publicised situation while pleading for people to move on from his troubled past.

“Wayne’s story about the glassing in Miami has again changed from when he did the Andrew Denton story (in 2008) saying he didn’t mean to break the glass on my face, but now he is saying he threw the glass on the ground,’’ Neilson said.

“Which is all lies. He was locked up in jail for a reason. Not because he poured wine on my face. I was bleeding profusely and the FBI took photos, which I have. So to say I was hardly a girlfriend is insulting when I lived with him for years and he flew to Tasmania and met my family, wrote about my dad in his autobiography and I was engaged to him.

“I’m extremely insulted by the downplay of all of this.”

Neilson said the pair dated solidly for four years after Carey left his wife, Sally, with whom he shared a daughter.

The dual North Melbourne premiership captain and father of three on Wednesday opened up about several incidents, including when in 1996 he pleaded guilty to indecently assaulting a woman by grabbing her breast on a Melbourne street and in 2008 when he had an altercation with police at his Port Melbourne apartment.

He claimed the notion that he’d glassed Neilson was “ludicrous”.

“An incident with a girl that I was seeing on and off, I wouldn’t call her a girlfriend … we were overseas in a restaurant and everyone says you glassed someone,’’ he said on Sam Newman’s You Cannot Be Serious podcast.

“You literally glassed your girlfriend. That is ludicrous, that is not accurate. Yes the glass did touch her because I was trying to throw wine, I’ve said this before publicly, I was trying to throw a mouthful of wine on her in a packed restaurant. I leant over and touched her lip. I then threw the glass on the ground and it smashed.”

Neilson disputes Carey’s version, saying he’s contradicted himself.

“There was no glass on the floor ever,’’ she said.

“There was so much blood and I have photos from the FBI. You don’t get arrested if you smashed a glass on the floor. I bailed him out of jail and paid the bond.

“You can’t change the story years later. I deal in facts and the fact is (what he said) on the Andrew Denton interview doesn’t match up with today’s version.”

After the Miami incident Carey was released on two years’ probation without a conviction after he admitted to assaulting US police and apologised.
