Tennis stars Ajla Tomljanovic and Matteo Berrettini say they have no regrets being part of the Netflix series Break Point despite their love match fizzling shortly after.
The pair were filmed behind the scenes together while in Melbourne over the Australian Open last year.
“It is a little bit awkward, a little bit weird but at the same time I was smiling and laughing,’’ Berrettini said.
“That was us and I still have great memories of that moment and the tournament. We broke up but life goes on, still for me it was a nice relationship, we shared so many good things.”
Tomljanovic, the top Aussie female player and Piper-Heidsieck ambassador, said you take the good with the bad.
“I have zero regrets, just because I think that’s my motto in life,’’ she said.
“I think that some of that episode, if people can have some takeaways, (it shows) what it’s like when two athletes are dating and the struggles that come with it. But I also don’t think you can really know much just by seeing when it comes to the actual relationship.”
Tomljanovic admits she might think twice in future about opening up her private life.
“You’re putting yourself out there and that’s never something I’m prepared for and I didn’t maybe think it through at the beginning. You’re just doing it and then when it comes out you’re like ‘oh wow we did that’.
“Nothing strange with people breaking up, it’s just there’s footage of that. It’s just something new for me but also not really a big deal.”
‘He fell in love with tennis again’
The way Nick Kyrgios falls back in love with tennis after winning the Australian Open doubles title helped secure him as the opener on Netflix doco Break Point.
Series executive producer, Paul Martin, said: “We were here 12 months ago and we were fascinated by Nick as everyone is. It seemed to be that he was a guy who was maybe on his way out of tennis. I think that what happened with Kokkinakis and winning the doubles, he just fell in love with tennis again.
“You really see change. I don’t think he necessarily cared that much about tennis and by the end of it he was back in love with it.”
Martin said he never expected Drive to Survive to have the impact it did with Formula One but hopes it’s the same for the tennis.
“When they’re just a picture on the wall it’s hard to root for them,’’ he said.
“I don’t think any of us saw Drive to Survive coming, it wasn’t part of the master plan. It’s the same here, we just tried to do the best that we can. I’m pretty hopeful the audiences will engage. If it gets more people through the gates and more people rooting for the Ajlas (Tomljanovic) of the world, then that’s great.”
