Singer Troy Sivan takes Melbourne gay club ‘Poof Doof’ global

Singer Troy Sivan’s explanation of Aussie slang term “poof doof” on an American talk show has gone global —and put this Chapel Street haunt on the map.

Poof Doof is an iconic Melbourne gay club on Chapel Street— and now, a global obsession.

Did singer Troye Sivan just introduce Melbourne institution “Poof Doof” to the world?

Founder Anthony “Hockers” Hocking, had already been doing that for some time, just this week announcing his club Poof Doof was taking over Amsterdam to help launch the city’s annual pride parade.

But Melbourne-based and frequent regular Sivan happily educated pearl clutching Americans about the Aussie term coined from the iconic queer club on Chapel St when he appeared on Seth Meyers late night talk show this week.

After explaining the more self-explanatory “bush doof” — or a techno party out in the country, Sivan continued:

“I don’t know if this is a slur in America … It’s fine (I’m gay). A poof doof is a gay party,” Sivan said.

Hockers told Page 13 the clip has since gone everywhere.

But he is well used to the intrigue and popularity, people have been flocking to the club since it first started in the CBD with just a small neon sign alerting the eclectic crowd to its whereabouts.

A move to the old Chaser’s nightclub on Chapel St in 2014 and Poof Doof has only gained momentum — and a bigger sign — becoming not just a place for the queer community to have a safe space and party hard, but for LGBTQA+ allies and performers from Delta Goodrem, Carl Cox to The Veronica’s to get down, perform and boogie.

Spice Girl’s Mel C recently posted she played the best gig of her life DJing at the bumping and grinding club where people come from all over the world to be pictured in front of the infamous neon wall.

Hockers has gone on to do his part in the community.

In Covid he came up with creating the Pride Patrol; a hot pink bus touring the country to create safe spaces and places for queer kids to feel a part of.

Just think Priscilla Queen of the Dessert on the double decker heading to top country, but in real life.

Keep on doofing!
