Robbie Williams has taken on a new role that he promises to take very seriously.
The superstar singer and avid Carlton fan was made the club’s global ambassador before his second and final show at AAMI Park on Thursday night.
Blues president Luke Sayers, along with coach Michael Voss and ruckman Tom De Koning, met with the UK star backstage.
Sayers presented him with a Carlton jacket bedazzled by Zac Williams’ partner Rachel.
“It’s got a little bit of bling, on behalf of the Carlton Footy Club you are now a global ambassador,’’ Sayers said.
“I take this role very seriously,’’ a smiling Williams said.
Williams’ love affair with the Blues and AFL reached fever pitch during September as the club barnstormed its way through finals.
After wowing the country with his Grand Final pre-game entertainment performance at the MCG last year, Williams paid tribute in song to Carlton big man Tom De Koning and coach Michael Voss after their big finals win over Melbourne.
“Wow, is it like this every year, because I am so in, my God,” Williams said on Instagram while watching the match on his laptop in Europe where he was on tour.
He mentioned De Koning in lyrics sung to the tune of Love Is In The Air.
“De Koning’s in the air everywhere I look around,” Williams sang.
“De Koning’s everywhere, leaving bodies on the ground,
“And he is better than his brother, even better than his dad,
“There is only one Thomas De Koning and he is the best one we have ever had.
“De Koning is in the air.
“The city is ours, the city is ours.”
Williams mentioned to De Koning in response to a poster in the crowd during his first concert on Wednesday night, and also sang ‘De Koning is in the air’ before a song on Thursday night.
He got on board the Blues bandwagon after meeting with Voss and being presented with a jumper last year.
