‘No bulls**t’: Why King Charles is remembered fondly at Geelong Grammar

He may have only attended Geelong Grammar for a short time, but the actions of a young King Charles in a Timbertop boiler room have gone down in folklore.

Whether King Charles will visit Australia after his coronation on May 6 is being seriously thought about, according to whispers drifting out of the Palace.

When his “dear mama” toured the empire in 1954 it was as a young Queen. Some 70 years later, Charles at 73 is an old king.

But while he is unlikely to be greeted by rapturous crowds in their tens-of-thousands in the streets, he is remembered as a schoolmate from his days at Timbertop.

The future king was 17 while most of his new school chums, as they would be called back home, were 14.

He was thought of as sort of prefect, and caught one of them lighting up in a Timbertop boiler room. The young Prince of Wales confiscated the boy’s cigarette and the whole packet when he came back and found him lighting up again.

But he didn’t dob him, which would have meant a few cuts from the cane.

Another boy, now in his 70s remembers the young Charles teaching him how to fly fish.

The cane might have been put away at Timbertop but the school is pretty much the same. Charles did not blot his copybook and there was “no bullshit” about him, another schoolmate said.

Back in Britain, Operation Golden Orb has started with an accompanying sideshow surrounding Harry and Meghan.

Will they be on the balcony at Buckingham Palace after the coronation is the next question after it’s been resolved their children will be known as Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet.

King Charles can confer or withdraw whatever titles he likes, but is turning out to be the same sort of decent bloke who has welcomed Harry and Meghan to stay at the Palace when they are in London.

Kylie Minogue won’t be singing at the coronation concert after “reading the room,” according to an insider.

Who will go to the coronation the day before? Probably even Malcolm Turnbull who headed the Australian republican movement if he’s invited.
