MODEL Kris Smith says his six-year-old son inspired him to sign up for I’m A Celebrity … Get Me Out Of Here!
And the 38-year-old Myer ambassador has spoken of his friendship with ex-partner Dannii Minogue, the mother of their son, Ethan.
“Ethan comes first for both of us,” Smith told News Corp Australia in South Africa.
“We have a really good relationship, I spoke to her earlier today for quite some time and she said it is going to be great for me to be in here. She has never been anything but supportive.
“I honestly do not have a bad word to say about the woman, she is incredible. The job she’s done with Ethan cos I’ve not been there all the time, I’ve been in Sydney and she’s been in Melbourne, he’s turned out an incredible young boy, someone we are both very proud of.
“She is an incredible woman, always has been, I’ve always thought that from day one and I still think that now.”
Smith and Minogue dated from 2008 to 2010. He moved to Australia to live with her, having grown up in Manchester where he played rugby union before taking up modelling.
“This gives me an opportunity to now showcase who I really am,” he said. “People say they thought I am going to be up my own arse, full of myself, and I am far from that. I am just a kid from a housing estate in Manchester that took a few lucky breaks and just jumped at every chance he’s been given and I just want to finally show people that.”
Smith and former model and actor Tziporah Malkah were the last two celebrities to enter the I’m A Celebrity … Get Me Out Of Here! camp.
They joined 10 others that went in on Sunday night — Casey Donovan, Lisa Curry, Jay Laga’aia, Ash Pollard, Natalie Bassingthwaighte, Nazeem Hussain, Dane Swan, Tom Arnold, Tegan Martin and Steve Price.
The celebrities will spend up to six weeks camping in the jungle living off basic supplies and competing in various challenges with the aim of securing $100,000 for their chosen charity. For Smith, that charity is White Ribbon Australia.
“This is my son’s favourite show and he struck up a conversation with me randomly when I was thinking about doing the show,” explained Smith, who is single. “It was freaking weird and the timing couldn’t have been better for me potentially thinking about doing it. I asked him why (he likes the show) and it was because they have them doing stupid things, doing crazy challenges and he said he loves to see the people’s faces when they do it. So I made the phone call and I was in.”
Smith added: “Any time I’m sat there with whatever on my face or eating whatever it is I am just going to remember that he is the one that went, that would be so cool if you do it.”
