Hell hath no fury like Madonna fans kept waiting, with two New York concertgoers are now suing Her Madgesty for kicking off her Celebration gig two hours late in December.
The pop legend has quite the reputation for tardy onstage arrivals. She tested the patience of her Australian fans during the Rebel Heart tour in 2016 and copped considerable flak when she didn’t start the Brisbane show until 11.20pm.
But American fans Michael Fellows and Jonathan Hadden are just not having it.
They have brought legal action against Madonna, her promoter Live Nation and the venue operator for the delayed kick off of her December 13 concert at Barclays Centre in Brooklyn.
The pair’s lawsuit said Madonna starting the show after 10.45pm despite an advertised start time of 8.30pm constituted a breach of contract and accused the parties of “unconscionable, unfair, and/or deceptive trade practices.”
In the lawsuit, the pair said they were “confronted with limited public transportation, limited ride-sharing, and/or increased public and private transportation costs” by the time the show finished up at 1am.
“Madonna had demonstrated flippant difficulty in ensuring a timely or complete performance, and Defendants were aware that any statement as to a start time for a show constituted, at best, optimistic speculation,” the lawsuit states.
They were Borderline furious that the late gig was no Holiday because “they had to get up early to go to work and/or take care of their family responsibilities the next day.”
Back in 2016 when Madonna toured Australia for the first time in 23 years, fans flooded social media with complaints about her delayed grand entrances and addressed the furore halfway through the tour.
“I’m hardly ever late. It’s you people that get here early that’s the problem,” she joked. “Just come late and I won’t have to come early. We’ve got three more shows and we want to fix the problem.”
The Celebration tour marking her four decades of pop supremacy opened in October in America after a two-month delay after she was hospitalised with a serious bacterial infection.
Madonna currently has 79 concerts scheduled through the US and Europe for the tour with Australian fans hopeful she may add shows here later in 2024.
