DEADPOOL 2 (2018)
Foxtel Now
***1/2
A hyper-snarky sequel every bit as great, grating and grotesquely funny as the original. The man, the motormouth and the mess of contradictions that is Deadpool is once again played by Ryan Reynolds with just the right/wrong notes of panache, arrogance and rapid-fire wit. A pulpy plot explores Deadpool’s quest to find a new sense of purpose after a sudden tragedy pushes him to the brink.
GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY (2014)
Stan
****
As only the best action-adventure blockbusters can do, this wittily retro Marvel offering gets on your good side with ease. Chris Pratt stars as Peter Quill, a self-styled “space outlaw” in cahoots with a green Amazonian assassin (Zoe Saldana), a multi-coloured muscleman (Dave Bautista), a talking raccoon (voiced by Bradley Cooper) and, umm, a talking tree (Vin Diesel).
THOR: RAGNAROK (2017)
Foxtel Now, Stan
***1/2
The third solo outing for Chris Hemsworth’s Thor sees the big burly bearded bloke in his best form. While the movie supplies the kind of sprawling action spectacle Marvel is renowned for, it is also a sly, dry comedy packed with deadpan punchlines and absurd sight gags. The good-natured goofiness to the fore is definitely the handiwork of genius NZ filmmaker Taika Waititi (Hunt For the Wilderpeople).
TEEN TITANS GO! TO THE MOVIES (2018)
Google, iTunes
***
A quality feature debut for the Teen Titans Go! gang. This gaggle of B-listers from the DC Comics stable have been fronting a very cool TV series for a few years now. The extended format makes even better use of their plentiful supply of in-jokey banter, out-there sight gags and a welcome disrespect for superhero self-importance that puts them on par with Deadpool.
HANCOCK (2008)
Netflix, Amazon
***
A darker brand of comedy that Will Smith has usually dealt in over the years, and all the better for it. Smith plays the title character, an alcoholic superhero looking to improve his public image and lose his permanent hangover. Story is a bit all over the place, but the action sequences (such as the one where Hancock trashes LA after flying while drunk) are rock solid throughout.
