Mack Horton says he has to believe the Olympics will go ahead in Tokyo

Olympic superstar Mack Horton says he he’s training hard for the Tokyo Games, but admits he’s trying not to think about whether it will go ahead.

Olympic swimming champion Mack Horton says he has to believe the Olympics will go ahead.

“For me to be able to train every day I have to be able to believe it’s going ahead, otherwise I wake up at 5.30am and destroy myself,’’ Horton told Confidential.

“So that’s what my gut tells me.

“I don’t really think about it at all because there’s nothing I can do about it.”

Horton has just been at a training camp in Queensland, the first time he’s gathered with fellow swimmers in 12 months.

The 400m freestyle gold medallist said the experience in Tokyo will be very different.

“It’s not going to be a pleasant experience for the athletes but they’ll still get the job done,’’ he said.

“Even as a swim team before we go to any major event anyway we need 2-3 weeks together.

We’re super lucky as Australians because we’re basically COVID free so when we come together we’ll be in good shape.”

Horton and partner Ella Walter attended the Australian Open men’s final with Piper-Heidsieck, along with model Brooke Hogan and her partner Myles Pitt.

He was backing the underdog Daniil Medvedev against world no.1 Novak Djokovic.

Meanwhile Bec and Chris Judd stepped out in style for the women’s final with Ralph Lauren, who also hosted Sabrina Elba, the wife of actor Idris Elba who is in Sydney shooting a new film.

Nicole Kidman was the big star on Ralph Lauren’s wishlist but as with most of the big names due to attend, the snap five day lockdown threw a spanner in the works.

Other faces in the crowd at the men’s final included Shane Warne, Michael Gudinski and Majak Daw.
