Kyle Sandilands and Dave Hughes confront each other over years-long feud

Dave Hughes and Kyle Sandilands have been publicly locking horns for almost 20 years. Today, they hashed out their problems on-air.

Jackie O surprised her co-host Kyle Sandilands with a “mystery guest” on-air this morning – an Aussie celeb he’s been locked in a feud with for the best part of 20 years.

Midway through today’s show, Jackie O revealed to her co-host that the mystery guest she’d organised was Australian comedian Dave Hughes.

She confessed she had a “bit of apprehension,” given the pair have publicly locked horns since as far back as 2007. Since then, the feud has been reignited at award shows, on social media, on-air, and most recently in an interview with the Herald Sun where Hughesy claimed he had “no empathy” for Sandilands’ despite his recent life-threatening health problems.

Their ancient social media beef was news to Sandilands: As Jackie O listed the pair’s “2009 Twitter feud” among their clashes over the years, he pointed out that he’s never had a Twitter account.

Dave Hughes and Kyle Sandilands have been publicly trading barbs for the best part of 20 years.

Jackie O sheepishly confessed that she was responsible for that one – she claimed that she had started a Twitter account pretending to be Kyle around that time to hit back at his critics, among them Hughesy.

Their May 2009 Twitter spat was an extended back-and-forth over TV and radio ratings in which neither emerged looking particularly good.

Minutes later, Hughes himself joined the duo via phone. He started by revealing he was “shocked” to learn that Jackie O had been impersonating Kyle on Twitter all those years ago, leading to a social media spat that he still “remembers well.”

Jackie O asked Hughesy about his recent comments that he had no “empathy” for Sandilands - he insisted that he was referring to the radio stars’ soft Melbourne ratings, not his ill health.

Hughesy said he wasn’t even aware Sandilands had been having health problems, given he was away filming I’m A Celeb when the news broke. “Health is everything,” he said.

But Hughes took Sandilands to task about one moment he’d forgotten ever happened: Sandilands saying he “wanted to murder” him during an old TV interview with Andrew Denton. Sandilands sheepishly confessed he didn’t even remember making the comment himself.

Dave Hughes insisted he would never discuss Sandilands’ health in such a brutal manner.

“Look, I know you could afford to have me killed - and I could afford to have you killed, but we’re not going to do that,” Hughes said with a laugh.

Hughes didn’t stay on the line for much longer, but after he and Sandilands had officially buried the hatchet, he told his former Masked Singer colleague Jackie that he’d seen fellow panel member Dannii Minogue the previous night.

That prompted Sandilands to ask if they ever kept in touch with Masked Singer panel member Lindsay Lohan, who made headlines for her alleged erratic behaviour during her one-season stint on the show.

Hughes offered up a memory that suggests there’s been another celeb feud hidden from view all these years: Lohan v. Minogue.

“The funniest moment of my life was driving along in the country on a Sunday and getting a call from Lindsay - she said ‘I want to go on your radio show right now, because Dannii Minogue’s trying to ruin my life,’” Hughes recalled. “It was a Sunday!”
