Julian Sands: British actor confirmed dead aged 65 after body identified following search

Human remains found in Californian mountains have been confirmed as British actor Julian Sands, who went missing more than 5 months ago.

Human remains found in a mountain region in California have been confirmed to be those of British actor Julian Sands, who disappeared more than five months ago.

Sands, 65, who was best known for his roles in award-winning film A Room With A View and TV’s 24 and Smallville, was reported missing on January 13 when he failed to return from a hiking trip in Mount Baldy, around 72 kilometres from Los Angeles.

The mountain range is considered one of the most dangerous climbing peaks in California.

Walkers found his body on Saturday and he has now been formally identified.

The initial search operation following Sands’ disappearance was hampered by dangerous storms and challenging, icy conditions.

Eighty volunteers and officials took part in the effort to find him, with police conducting eight ground and air missions.

The 65-year-old actor, who was based in Los Angeles, got his big screen break in the 1985 film A Room With A View opposite Helena Bonham Carter, and has since gone on to star in more than 150 TV and film productions.

His most widely-known films include Warlock (1989) Naked Lunch (1991), and The Medallion (2003).

Just prior to his disappearance, he’d wrapped shooting on the black comedy feature film Seneca – On The Creation of Earthquakes, which co-stars US actress Marie-Louise Parker and British actors Tom Xander and Andrew Koji.

Sands has been married to US author Evgenia Citkowitz since 1990. The couple share two daughters.

Sands also has a son from his previous marriage to British journalist Sarah Harvey, who he was with from 1984 until 1987.
