Blockbuster Broadway musical Hamilton will open at Her Majesty’s Theatre on March 16.
“I’m super-excited that the show is coming to Melbourne,” Jason Arrow, who plays the lead character, American founding father Alexander Hamilton, told the Herald Sun.
The record-breaking hip hop musical, created by multiple Tony Award winner Lin-Manuel Miranda, and playing in Sydney until early 2022, has smashed box office records in Australia.
With its mix of rap and soul, Hamilton, which based on the American Revolution, is one of the most verbose shows on the planet, often averaging 144 words per minute.
Arrow, whose parents emigrated to Australia from South Africa, says Hamilton’s ambition reminds him of their journey.
“When we came to Australia, we didn’t have much at all. We came from very humble beginnings. My parents both worked like crazy, and my sister took care of me,” Arrow said.
“It was very much an immigrant tale where we came up from nothing. Any opportunity that would come up, they would take it, and accept it with grace. I’m very proud of them.
“I was no stranger to hard work because it was in front of me everyday. It very much shaped me in the way I had to really out myself out there to make things happen.”
Arrow said Miranda’s strongest words of advice to the Australian cast was: “We need soldiers, not heroes” — a COVID-climate message for actors to stay home if they feel unwell.
Hamilton’s US producer Jeffrey Seller said he was “thrilled ... Hamilton will call Melbourne home next year, and for more audiences to experience the talents of this inspiring company.”
The musical’s Australian producer Michael Cassel added: “Australians have rallied behind this production as it continues to enjoy full houses and standing ovations every night. We can’t wait for Melburnians to see it.”
Tickets for Hamilton’s Melbourne season will go on July 19, with pre-sale tickets available to Telstra Plus members on June 24.
