Blockbuster Broadway musical Hamilton will open at Melbourne’s Her Majesty’s Theatre in 2022.
The record-breaking hip hop musical, written and directed by multiple Tony Award winner Lin Manuel Miranda, is heading south after a year-long run in Sydney.
The musical’s Australian producer, Michael Cassel, will announce the show’s Melbourne run at the end of May.
It is believed the dates have not been finalised and producers are seeking a March to May window for the Melbourne premiere.
A spokesman for Mr Cassell would not comment on speculation about Hamilton’s Melbourne season. Hamilton received five-star reviews and a star-studded reception when it opened at Sydney’s Lyric Theatre in March.
Broadway producer Jeffrey Sellar attended the Sydney premiere and sang the praises of the Australian cast, which includes Jason Arrow in the lead role, and Geelong actor Lyndon Watts as Hamilton’s rival, Aaron Burr.
“I’m standing here because of you,” Seller told the opening-night crowd.
“I come from the USA. You were smart, you were thoughtful, you expressed discipline and self sacrifice and that’s why we’re all here together again back in the theatres.
“It’s a new beginning for Hamilton, it’s a new beginning for theatregoers all over the world who have been yeaning for these last 13 months to come back to the theatre.”
With its mix of mix of rap and soul, the hit musical, based on the American Revolution broke box office records in Australia after 250,000 tickets were sold before the first preview in March.
Hamilton’s foray into Melbourne follows a stellar return of musical theatre to Melbourne stages.
Broadway hit Come From Away led the charge at the Comedy Theatre, followed by Harry Potter and the Cursed Child at the Princess Theatre.
Frozen the Musical, based on the mega-hit Disney movie, opens at Her Majesty’s Theatre in June, while Moulin Rouge will roll out the red carpet at the Regent Theatre in August.
