Gary Mehigan is hoping the “strange celebrity” of himself, Matt Preston and Manu Feildel will provide an enticing familiarity in their new show Plate of Origin.
Mehigan and Preston, the former MasterChef judges, team up with My Kitchen Rules judge Feildel for the cultural cuisine competition premiering on Channel 7 this Sunday.
“Manu is an old friend and we felt like a band of brothers,’’ Mehigan said.
“We’ve always had a strange celebrity all of us, where people know our first names and treat us like the postman rather than somebody famous which I’ve always enjoyed.
“It’s a bit of star power and a bit of familiarity and we hope people still love us.
“We’re all genuine fellas and the show is a refreshing taste on a familiar concept.”
Mehigan said he is excited for the future and confident their former third wheel, George Calombaris, will bounce back from tough times.
“George had a really tough year last year and this year. It’s a been a game changer in his life, such a dramatic change from being one of the most successful restaurateurs in the country to a life that’s different,’’ Mehigan said.
“Being a very good friend of his and close to him he has to deal with that differently to us.
“MasterChef was a big change for us whereas George had to handle a lot more.
“He’ll bounce back and he’s resilient. He’s a very clever man and people will forgive him and we’ll support him.”
Mehigan said food was one of the world’s great unifiers.
“There’s art, music and food that break down the windows and bond us through our similarities rather than what separates us,’’ he said.
“You realise how important those things are when times are tough.
“I always feel a bit cliche saying it but you know it’s been really important for Matt and I to be part of something that’s been really uplifting and a joy to celebrate. It’s a great bunch of people and contestants.”
