The radio rumour mill is in overdrive about who will replace Marty Sheargold on Triple M, with a couple of well-known comedians tipped to be in the running.

Triple M Melbourne announced on Thursday that Sheargold had “decided to step down” from the breakfast shift “as he continues to balance his many commitments including his stand-up comedy and appearing on some of Australia’s favourite TV programs”.

Sheargold said: “Taking an extended break at the end of last year has reinforced the importance of spending more quality time with my family. As a result, I have made the decision to prioritise self-care, maintaining a better work/life balance and will not be returning to my Triple M Breakfast show.”

Marty Sheargold will focus on his TV appearances on shows including HYBPA and Fisk.

Sheargold, who is currently on leave, will still be heard nationally on the Triple M network from 3-4pm each weekday, and the incredibly popular Marty Sheargold Show podcast will continue as well.

Triple M said in the press release that “details of the new 105.1 Triple M Melbourne Breakfast show will be announced in due course”.

So the question is, who are the contenders to replace Sheargold?

“I think there’s a chance that Mick Molloy will be broadcast into both Melbourne and Sydney,” Craig Bruce, a former radio executive who now hosts the Game Changers Radio: Melbourne Radio Wars podcast, told news.com.au.

“He’s loved in Melbourne.”

Molloy currently hosts the Triple M breakfast show in Sydney alongside NRL legend, Mark Geyer.

“In this current environment, one show amortised across two markets would be helpful for Southern Cross Austereo,” Mr Bruce said, referring to the company that owns Triple M.

The Game Changers host said there’s also a possibility Dave Hughes, who currently hosts the 2Day FM breakfast show in Sydney, could return to Melbourne’s airwaves.

“Dave Hughes and Ed Kavalee could be the other option,” Mr Bruce told news.com.au.

“If that happens, they’d be replaced on 2Day FM breakfast by Mike Etheride (Mike E) and Emma Chow.”

Other radio insiders have suggested that former AFL star turned media darling, Dale ‘Daisy’ Thomas, could feature on Triple M Melbourne’s new breakfast show.

He actually appeared on Sheargold’s show as a guest just last month.

Thomas, who finished second on I’m a Celeb in 2020, has been a part of Triple M’s footy team for years and is said to be very popular with network bosses.
