Popular radio host Marty Sheargold is stepping down from his breakfast shift at Triple M, it’s been announced this morning.

An announcement issued by the station stated that while Sheargold has “decided to step down from the 105.1 Triple M Melbourne Breakfast shift, he remains an important member of the Triple M and LiSTNR family.”

The news comes after Sheargold took a sudden break from the airwaves in October last year, citing mental exhaustion for his abrupt departure. He returned to radio in January, explaining that he’d “burned himself out over the past couple of years.”

Sheargold made the announcement at a time when the show is on survey break, meaning he hasn’t had a chance to say goodbye to listeners on-air.

news.com.au understands the show will not be returning at all to the breakfast slot. Sheargold and his team will remain on break for a few weeks, before returning for their national afternoon show (3-4pm) in mid-July.

In a statement today, Sheargold said that taking that break had “reinforced the importance of spending more quality time with my family. As a result, I have made the decision to prioritise self-care, maintaining a better work/life balance and will not be returning to my Triple M Breakfast show.

“However, I will continue The Marty Sheargold Show podcast, along with the 3-4pm national Triple M show. I want to thank my immediate team and the network for their ongoing support and understanding. And I’d also like to thank the listeners for their loyalty to both the show and the station. Like them, I remain a Triple M fan.”

The Marty Sheargold Show has never rated strongly in Melbourne. It has a 5.9 per cent audience share according to the most recent radio ratings, a long way behind FM market leader The Christian O’Connell Show on Gold FM (10.4 per cent), and Fox FM’s Fifi, Fev and Nick (10.0 per cent).

Outside of his radio commitments, Sheargold will continue to tour his stand-up around the country and will appear on the next season of the hit ABC series Fisk.

Sheargold co-hosted his Triple M show with Troy Ellis, Loren Barry and Will Ralston, who will all remain with the program for the national 3-4pm slot and podcast.

Triple M stated today that details of the replacement breakfast show would be announced “in due course.”
