Footy media legend Rex Hunt has been treated by ambulance officers after a collision between a car and his stationary vehicle in bayside Melbourne on Friday night.

Angling icon Hunt, 74, was waiting to turn into Beach Road from the Mordialloc Pier around 9pm on Friday when his black Nissen Navara was allegedly reversed into.

Police attended as did an ambulance after Hunt slumped over the steering wheel and complained of neck pain.

He was taken to the Epworth Hospital for observation and returned home early Saturday.

“Police were called to a collision at the intersection of Beach Road and Pier Road in Mordialloc on Friday 15 September,” Victoria Police said in a statement.

“It’s understood a gold Toyota Camry reversed into a black Nissan Navara which was stationary, about 9pm.

“The female driver of the Toyota stopped at the scene.”

“The driver of the Nissan, a 74-year-old man from Beaumaris, was taken to hospital with minor injuries.”

Ambulance Victoria confirmed a crew had attended the scene.

“Paramedics were called to a report of a collision in Mordialloc around 9pm last night (Friday). A man believed to be in his 70s was taken to the Epworth in a stable condition,” a spokesperson said.

Police have asked anyone who witnessed the incident to call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

A former star player for Richmond, Hunt is a legend of footy and fishing media in Australia.

He has been open about his struggle with his mental health in recent years and in May revealed that he suffers from bipolar depression.

He has received treatment at mental health clinics on several occasions this year.

Hunt told Sam Newman’s You Cannot Be Serious podcast recently that his mental health decline started seven years ago after he became hooked on powerful pain killing opioids following surgery for a debilitating neck injury.

“Life will never ever be the same. Mental illness is a nasty word for some, but until it happens to you, I had no idea the ups and downs your mind goes through when you are suffering what I am suffering (from),” Hunt said.

“It is a chemical imbalance in the brain and I have been diagnosed with bipolar depression, high highs and low lows.”

He said he was officially diagnosed six years ago following a “meltdown” that saw him admitted to a mental health clinic in country Victoria for six weeks.
