On the eve of the 2023 Logies we have taken a look back at some of the juiciest moments – from celebrity slip-ups, tears and ego clashes to hilariously drunken moments.

You’ve heard the one about Bert Newton accidentally insulting Muhammad Ali at the Logie Awards, but what about the nationally known presenter who did handstand at an afterparty exposing her lack of underwear.

Or Harry Styles causing a near riot of teenage fans on the red carpet?

And then there was the devilishly handsome TV star who after a long night of Logie partying refused to leave his room for an early morning media commitment because he was sure the famed beauty in his suite was about to fall for his renowned charms.

For more than 60 years the Logies have been a hotbed of sex, superstars, scandals, celebrity slip ups, tears, ego clashes, and loose moments caused by one too many drinks.

While many tales have been told countless times, here are some that are far more juicy and far less known.

Take the very friendly international star who was a bit of a bore in front of the cameras but came to life at a network afterparty after taking a shine to a TV starlet and very publicly started licking and kissing her feet. The pictures would have been worth a fortune at the time – if cameras had been allowed in.

A few years later there was the US drama star who was not in town for long, but long enough to rendezvous with a local news reader late in the night after the Logie’s ceremony. She insists nothing more than kisses were exchanged ….

After, after parties (you read that right) used to cause all manner of headaches. Just ask the high profile TV presenter who went to a post Logie after-party at a Melbourne nightclub and did a handstand on the dance floor revealing she wasn’t wearing underwear. Rumour was the network she was attached to had to track down certain photographers and buy up the too rude pics.

US singer Macy Gray was a big name performer at the Logies in 2000. She certainly left her mark, smearing food over the walls of her hotel room at Crown after her performance. The mess made headlines.

The Bachelor’s Osher Gunsberg decided to use the Logie that his show Australian Idol won at the 2006 awards as a lucky chip at a poker table during a 3am Texas Hold’em showdown at an afterparty.

Back in 1989 famed beauty Raquel Welch was a guest at the awards. She demanded to be filmed in her best light meaning a very soft filter was used. Viewers could have been excused for thinking there was fog in the room so soft was the lighting.

Dust-ups are part of Logies folklore, topped by Ernie Sigley and Don Lane facing off after the ceremony in 1988. Lane claimed that Sigley allegedly made insulting remarks about his partner, and Lane retaliated by throwing a punch at Sigley.

Former Home And Away heart-throb Dieter Brummer ended-up in court after an altercation in 2011 with security at Crown in the early hours.

Catching Milat actor Malcolm Kennard was allegedly involved in a punch-up at an after-party in 2016 with Bo Phillips, the brother of KIIS FM presenter Lauren Phillips.

There was no love lost between then Neighbours castmates Jane Hall and Kym Valentine in 2008.

Valentine had started dating Vince Colosimo, the ex-partner of Hall, and the drama was worthy of a soap script. The two women were kept apart on the red carpet, not seated anywhere near each other during the ceremony, and attended different after-parties.

Channel 10, who they filmed Neighbours for, even arranged for their make-up to be done on separate floors of their hotel to avoid them crossing paths.

Singer John Mayer made an impact in 2010 lying on his back in front of the women’s toilets outside the Channel 9 after-party saying: “this is how I meet most women.”

In 2000, Tracy Grimshaw opened her hotel room door at Crown to collect the paper the morning after the awards.

As she stooped to pick up the paper, the door closed behind her leaving her stranded and extremely underdressed. Red-faced she wrapped the paper about her and called for help.

At the height of their fame, One Direction featuring Harry Styles, appeared at the 2012 Logies, causing absolute hysteria among fans and causing organisers to build an extra large red carpet to manage the chaos.

Some remarkable names have performed at the Logies in bygone years.

Ricky Martin headlined in 2001. In 2002, Beyonce rocked up with Destiny’s Child, Elton John has performed as has Shakira, Pink and Katy Perry.

Bruno Mars and Ed Sheeran have had Logie moments.

And in 2012 it was Tony Bennett’s turn to add some class to proceedings.

Oh, and, of course, who could forget Karl Stefanovic turning up drunk to host Today after the

Logies in 2009.

Tim Webster found out in 2003 that celebrities and animals are a dangerous mix.

Webster was minding his own business on a 10 table when Steve Irwin rolled off stage clutching a snake and the angry reptile retaliated by sinking its fangs into Webster’s thigh on live TV. Ouch.

A couple of years previous to that, there was a much talked about blow up in the loos between a glamorous actress and the wife of a very well-known TV presenter. The presenter, no stranger to drama, was – to be polite – having his cake and eating it too.

Speaking of toilets, yes, lots of guests over the years have ended up in the loos. What they do in there – I’ll leave it up to your imagination.

And finally those who were there still recall with horror the year of the asparagus nightmare.

Against better judgement, asparagus was included in the dishes on the Logies menu this particular year which resulted in a horrendous pong from the male and female toilets later in the night thanks to the stinky pee produced by the asparagusic acid.

“Twelve hundred people, you can just imagine the smell,” said a survivor.

The 63rd Logie Awards take place in Sydney on Sunday (July 30)
