Sam Newman is mourning the loss of “the love of my life”, his beloved boat.
Named Sea Sea Rider, the boat was Newman’s great passion until he clipped rocks near Williamstown in February.
“It was the love of my life, the boat. (Buying) it was the best thing I have ever done,” Newman said.
“I managed to limp it back to its berth at Yarra’s Edge.
“Four days later, someone rang me up to say it was sinking. Unbeknown to me, it had a hole in the back (stern gland) and it was half underwater.
“Rescue crews pumped it out but unfortunately that spelt the end of it, because the water had got into the electrical system and the insurance company adjudicated it was not worth fixing it.”
The demise of Sea Sea Rider has brought to an end Newman’s boating days. He won’t be replacing the impressive craft.
“Unfortunately it has been a very, very emotional detachment from the boat, but life goes on,” he said. “I am no longer a boater.
“There was nothing more relaxing than taking it out on my own and sitting out in the middle of nowhere contemplating life as we know it.
“But you should never cry over things that can’t cry over you.”
Newman is making a return to the Sunday Footy Show today with a new segment titled Sam’s Shed where he interviews greats of the game in his garage.
