As Sam Newman begins what is likely to be his last year as part of Channel 9’s star stable, another Newman is poised to start a media career.

Max Newman, 22, is Sam’s youngest son; his mother, Leonie Jones, is Sam’ s former partner.

Having spent years behind the scenes of The Footy Show with his dad, Max said he was keen to follow his father into TV.

While a serious back injury in his mid-teens meant football was off the agenda, he is a student of the game and also of basketball.

“I love sport and have seen the highs and lows and good and bad sides of it through Dad both on and off TV,” Max said.

“I would really love to get into it (TV). That is what I am trying to strive towards.”

He said his father encouraged him to follow his passions.

“I have spoken to him a couple of times (about TV) and he has always been incredibly supportive and encouraged me to do what I feel is right.

“Sport is what I know, having grown up in and around it and behind the scenes. I am incredibly passionate about it.”

And he would not rule out acting or reality TV.

“I’m not sure if I am a very good actor, but if the door opens I would be happy to at least try.”
