Sam Newman’s drama-filled sailing adventure has continued with a fire breaking out on the former Footy Show star’s boat and him being hit by his own drone.
It has been far from smooth sailing for Newman with a litany of things going wrong or breaking down as he embraces life on the water.
Newman made it to Airlie Beach in Queensland about a four weeks ago after ploughing through rough seas.
He faced his biggest drama last week when two of his vessel’s four batteries shorted out and caught fire.
According to Newman he had to “deploy the fire extinguisher” to put out the potentially highly dangerous flames.
Genuinely shaken, Newman posted footage of his boat’s smoke filled engine room and the damaged batteries in social media clips.
Having had the batteries replaced and various smaller mechanical issues fixed, Newman hit his next hurdle, being attacked by his own drone.
After launching the device with the plan to capture some footage of the marina his boat, Angst, currently calls home, the drone was barely off the ground before it hit his leg and gouged his left foot.
Newman said he was unsure whether the drone has been pushed into him by a gust of wind or if he had hit the wrong control button, but what he was sure of was that he had a deep bleeding gash on his foot.
A trip to Proserpine Hospital, his fifth visit to the establishment in four weeks, determined that he did not need stitches.
He has since put his drone flying days on hold and proving his commitment to his decision he filmed himself smashing the flying machine and throwing it is in the drink.
Newman, who is travelling with his friend Sue Stanley, is helping raise awareness of the Rule Prostate Cancer organisation during his northern excursion.
