What a difference a year makes.
Jase Hawkins, Lauren Phillips and Clint Stanaway of Nova Melbourne’s breakfast show marked an unusual anniversary on Friday, with November 22 being the date last year that they were told they were being axed from the breakfast shift at KIIS FM to make way for Kyle Sandilands and Jackie Henderson.
Twelve months on, the number 1 FM breakfast show in Melbourne is the Nova trio while Sandilands and his posse are dwelling in seventh position in the overall breakfast market.
“We just want to thank everyone for listening to our show. It was one year ago today that we were told no one wanted to listen to us on the radio,” Phillips said on their show on Friday.
“We got shafted a year ago to the day,” Hawkins added.
Addressing their listeners Phillips said: “We love waking up with you in the mornings. It’s been a roller coaster of a year for us. We love being here. This has been the greatest professional year of my life.
“Thank you to everyone for making this switch and sticking with us.
“I think a year ago, if you could have told us we would be here right now doing this, our little minds would have exploded. We wouldn’t have believed it.”
Hawkins recalled: “Mate, a year ago, I was enrolling kids into school on the Gold Coast.”
Meanwhile, as the Jase & Lauren Show marked what for many would be a dark milestone over at KIIS Sandilands was calling out to “you a*seholes” - his listeners - in Melbourne to go on a recruitment drive to boost his audience.
“What I am asking all our Melbourne listeners to do is convince one person, just one, that does not listen to us to have a little listen,” Sandilands said on The Kyle & Jackie O Show on Wednesday.
“You only need to convince one each .. then we absolutely dominate the Melbourne market.
“We don’t ask a lot, but it is the least you a*seholes down there can do.”
