Controversial former player agentRicky Nixon has broken his silence on his Somerville stand-off with TV great Sam Newman, saying the Footy Show star gave him a clip over the ear and pushed him into a bush.
“He didn’t punch me, I think he slapped me in the face,” Nixon said.
“What happened was I had a pimple that morning (Friday), which is pretty rare for me, and he actually hit the pimple and it started bleeding.
“But he also pushed me into a bush.”
Nixon clarified the pair’s blow up was at the side of the Somerville Cricket Club, not behind the cricket sheds.
And he said he did not make a headbutting motion towards Newman, but did have his nose close to Newman’s when they were each strongly expressing their individual points of view.
“I found his reaction a little bit over the top,” Nixon said.
“I also learnt something from it, both he and Warwick Capper can’t fight so they need to stick to what they do best.
“I guess we will have to kiss and make up so I can teach Don Scott how to deal with him.”
The pair’s blow up came over a speaking fee at a lunchtime event in Somerville on Friday.
Nixon had asked Newman to join him as a speaker at the lunch and the pair had settled on a fee, which Nixon would pay Newman.
On Friday, after Newman’s appearance, the pair had words when Newman discovered his fee would be less than he believed he had been promised.
The pair stepped outside to continue their conversation and the disagreement escalated.
“We were originally booked for $3000 to appear at the event and we were to split the fee,” Nixon said.
“Sam put it in his diary that he was getting $3000. In fairness, I put it in a spreadsheet of bookings to him that it was $3000, but I meant it was for the two of us. I would never short change him.”
The unfortunate exchange was noticed by locals having a beer.
“I told him ‘calm down, we look like dickheads’,” Nixon said.
Their discord was a hot topic among guests inside the venue when Nixon returned minutes later to give his presentation.
However when asked on Sunday if he would like to comment on Nixon’s version of events Newman said: “Could I ask you not to waste my time again on this matter or that person.”
Newman recently had strong opinions about his close friend Don Scott, leading to Scott taking “long service leave” from their popular You Cannot Be Serious podcast.
