Controversial AFL identity Ricky Nixon has been accused of kneeing a police officer as he left court.

Mr Nixon, 60, fronted Melbourne Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday charged with assault and endangering the safety of a man by throwing a “missile” at him in Port Melbourne on March 10 last year.

The court heard the former football player’s agent planned to fight the allegations, which included launching an Australia Post parcel at his victim, by claiming self-defence.

Magistrate Malcolm Thomas adjourned the case for a two-day contested hearing in September.

But as Mr Nixon left the courtroom, he allegedly assaulted the senior constable who had charged him.

The prosecution later revealed the alleged attack to Mr Thomas, who said it was up to police whether assault charges should be laid against Mr Nixon.

Victoria Police said Melbourne Crime Investigation Unit detectives were investigating.

“The officer was assaulted by a man during a court hearing about 10.30am,” a police spokeswoman said.

“The officer was not injured. No arrests have been made and the investigation remains ongoing.”

The Herald Sun has tried to contact Mr Nixon for comment.

It is Mr Nixon’s first of two court appearances expected this week, with him listed to return to Melbourne Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday for a contested hearing relating to a $300 speeding fine.

He told an earlier court he was heading to a Neale Daniher charity golf event when police allege he was doing 92km/h in an 80km/h zone of the Midland Highway on June 14, 2021.

But he argues he had passed “a digital sign” which claimed the speed was not due to change from 100km/h to 80km/h until midnight.

Mr Nixon became one of the most high-profile sports agents in Australia after retiring from a decade-long AFL career in 1993 in which he played 63 games for Carlton, St Kilda and Hawthorn.

He managed dozens of AFL stars, including Wayne Carey, Gary Ablett Senior and Nick Riewoldt.
