Melbourne’s top designers and creatives converged on Government House for the launch of the 2023 Melbourne Fashion Festival on Friday.
Toni Maticevski, Jason Grech, Paul McCann, Lisa Barron, Margaret Porritt, Bianca Roccisano, Genevieve and Alexandra Smart and Effie Kats were among the throng enjoying the Government House experience.
Influencer and crockery identity Nadia Bartel looked ready for a party, sporting a sliver of what appeared to be white denim masquerading as a skirt.
She arrived just as the formal speeches started which included an announcement that Kmart had come on board as a sponsor of the festival’s fashion business lunch.
Fashion is nothing if not about getting a shot of yourself and it turned out that Government House is ready made for snap happy preeners.
Influencers among the guests were attracted to a huge mirrored wall at the end of the ballroom like moths to a flame to stare at themselves and pose for selfies. A beeline was made as soon as formalities ended.
Meanwhile, forget all the models, wannabes and social gadabouts, the unsung fashion dynamo of Melbourne is surely lauded milliner Richard Nylon.
Nylon over the years has taken event dressing to an art form.
He was an embellished vision at the Flemington Birdcage on Derby Day, was a standout on the red carpet at the NGV Gala in a stick inspired ensemble that paid homage to Alexander McQueen and he aced the fashion test at the launch of the Melbourne Fashion Festival with a sculptural oversized floral adornment across his chest and shoulders.
His outfits are artistic, interesting and have character - truly Melbourne fabulous. Can more people take his lead and be bold, please.
Guests at the launch included Governor Linda Dessau, Lord Mayor Sally Capp, Caroline Ralphsmith, Launa Inman, Morgan Mitchell, Lana Wilkinson, Baker Boy, Khanh Ong, Sarah Todd, Helen Reizer, Lauren Thurin, Sarah Lew and Chris Lucas, Amanda Smorgon and Maryanne and Chantel Giannarelli.
The Festival takes place from March 3-11, 2023.
