Footy tragic and The Front Bar host Mick Molloyhas revealed a girlfriend once left him and Melbourne as she could not stand listening to any more talk about football.
“I had a former girlfriend who left Melbourne because she goes, ‘I just can’t have another conversation about football’, and as she was leaving and being driven to the airport the cab driver goes, ‘So who is your team?’,” Molloy said.
“This town is fuelled by football.”
Molloy’s glee at the restart of the AFL season on June 11 is matched by that of fans of his show, The Front Bar, which returns to Channel 7 on Thursday at 8.45pm.
“It will be great to have the footy back so we can talk about something other than Max Gawn’s hairstyle,” Molloy said. “We are back in business.
“It is a bit like when we used to watch the footy at the All Nations (pub).
“After the Grand Final we would go there the next Friday and no one would know what to do because we used to stand at the bar and watch footy and there was no footy on. The publican went out and got a video of an old game and put it on so everyone stopped panicking.”
Molloy said he had adapted to isolation.
“The things
I missed were having a beer in a pub, a table at a good restaurant and playing golf,” he said. “I pretended my house was a pub and set up bars in different areas.”
