Collingwood premiership star Nick Maxwell didn’t get a chance to enjoy the reunion of his 2010 grand final winning Magpie teammates, despite hosting the get-together, as he was rushed to hospital after stabbing his hand while opening a wine bottle.
Maxwell hosted his teammates at his Eclat workplace in Camberwell Junction last Saturday, but he didn’t get the chance to raise a glass to his fellow players.
While cutting the wax seal off a wine bottle before as his guests arrived, the knife he was using slipped and drove deep into his hand.
“(An) unexpected event at the Pies party was the opening of my hand,” Maxwell wrote on LinkedIn.
“And I mean literally, I was opening a bottle of wine with a wax seal and I drove a knife into the space between my thumb and index finger.
“It was an ugly sight, like something from Game of Thrones — there was blood flying in all directions.”
He was quickly carted off to hospital.
“Luckily after scaring a nurse and getting some stitches and a phenomenal patch job by the doctor I’m on the mend,” he said.
“Talk about blood, sweat, and tears.”
Maxwell’s teammate Dane Swan elaborated on the Pies drama.
“He was trying to get the wax off a wine bottle and stabbed himself,” Swan said.
“So he had to have surgery on his hand.
“So that was a good start to the day. If you were going to run a book of who was going to end up in hospital that day he would have been way down the list.”
The reunion brought together the likes of Swan, Dale Thomas, Mick Malthouse, Luke Ball, Eddie McGuire, Heath Shaw, Travis Cloke, Scott Pendlebury and Darren Jolly.
Sam Fisher pops up at Christmas drinks
Ex-AFL player Sam Fisher made a rare foray on to social media on Saturday as he prepares to contest drugs charges in court next year.
Fisher, who has been seeking help this year for drug addiction and was recently released from a rehabilitation facility, was with mates at the Good Blokes Society Christmas drinks at Moonee Valley Racecourse on Friday.
“Found a few slow reindeer @thevalleyracecourse last night but all is good when you’re in the company of the @goodblokessociety,” he wrote.
The former Saint posted a photo of himself with former footballers, including Robert DiPierdomenico and Mark Eustace.
The Good Blokes Society is a men’s support and networking group founded by Shaun Wallis.
Fisher, 39, has pleaded not guilty to eight charges, including trafficking a large commercial quantity of methylamphetamine and cocaine. He was arrested in May this year.
He is accused of allegedly trafficking the drugs between Melbourne and Perth hidden in whitegoods purchased from Harvey Norman.
It’s alleged Fisher and another man based in Western Australia concealed drugs and cash in the items, including one package that contained approximately 1kg of methylamphetamine and 84g of cocaine, before sending them interstate.
Fisher, who played 288 games for St Kilda from 2004 to 2016, remains free in the community on a $25,000 surety.
He will appear at the County Court of Victoria in January.
