Carlton great Brendan Fevola has survived his debut Mixed Martial Arts Fight, with the much hyped bout against Tony ‘The Tradie’ Ciccone ending in a draw at Festival Hall on Saturday night.
Fevola took part in the exhibition cage match which was put on as part of the Hex Fight Series. His opponent, Ciccone, earned his place in the cage by winning a competition on Fevola’s Fox FM breakfast show.
Unlike Fevola, Ciccone had trained in MMA before and knew how to fight.
By his own admission, Fevola’s preparation was unorthodox and left him a little under prepared.
“Considering I thought it was a boxing fight when I signed up and I asked for head gear and they said ‘all you need is shin pads’ and I said ‘why’,” I think I did OK,” Fevola said.
“I don’t think it was a draw though; congratulations Tony.”
Fevola warmed up for the fight by watching NCIS in the locker room before entering the cage to the Culture Club song Do You Really Want to Hurt Me with a placard waving entourage escorting him.
The fight over two rounds, each two minutes long, drew cheers from the packed house.
The second round the pair traded kicks and then went toe to toe throwing punches at each other’s head before Ciccone got Fevola on the ground.
“He was 17kg heavier than me. I was 115kg this morning and he was 132kg. He was too hard to get off me once he got on top of me,” Fevola said.
“Just my lungs hurt. I don’t think he hit me much. I got him a heap. I don’t feel like I have been hit.
“He tried to break my arm at one stage. I was like ‘aarrgghhh’.
“Then I saw my mate Nate Myles and I smiled at him, that’s when my mouthguard fell out. “Then I saw Jack Crisp from Collingwood when I was on the ground and I winked at him and he was like ‘hey’ and I was like ‘what am I doing?’.”
Lying on the ground in this change room post fight, absolutely exhausted, Fevola did not rule out stepping into the cage again.
“It was actually really fun, I might do it again, but I will train this time,” he said.
Watching on from cage side was Mia Fevola and her boyfriend Bass Miller, Brendan’s father Angelo, Brent Harvey, Michael Zerafa, Ben Silvagni and Brody Mihocek.
