AFL great Luke Darcy has labelled Premier Daniel Andrews a “toddler” for shirking respsonsibility for the state’s massive debt.

Former footy champ Luke Darcy has taken a swipe at Dan Andrews, describing him as a “toddler” and questioning his maturity.

The Triple M commentator and businessman didn’t hold back when asked if the Premier’s comments during the week, where he blamed the blow out in Victoria’s debt, in part, on the Reserve Bank for urging people and state governments to borrow money in the early stages of the pandemic, were fair.

The Premier said the national cabinet had received briefings from Reserve Bank governor, Phillip Lowe, early in the Covid-19 crisis where they were told to borrow while interest rates were low.

“I think absolutely fair from the Premier, if you are a four-year-old,” Darcy said on Triple M’s Friday night Huddle show.

“You teach your kids when they are four or five, and you say to them, ‘Did you take that out of the fridge?” and they say, ‘No, it was my brother that did it, my older brother told me to do it,’ and you go, ‘No.’

“When you are four, you learn to take accountability.

“You don’t blame someone else, you put your hand up, particularly when you have a treasury department surrounded by economists whose job it is to explain to you that those things do change (and you have) those levers at your discretion.

“I totally understand if you had the maturity of a toddler, that would be fair.”

It is not the first time that Darcy has been critical of Andrews.

He famously took the Premier to task during an interview on Triple M’s Hot Breakfast program in September 2020 where he challenged him over the State’s Covid-19 response and the road map out of lockdown.

While Darcy’s comments on Friday night were made in a jovial tone, it was clear he was making a firm point about buck passing and responsibility, a point that the rest of the Huddle crew did not challenge.
