It was a game of love for Essendon veteran David Zaharakis and his model girlfriend Amy Pejkovic at the Australian Open Women's Final.
The couple has played the long-distance romance game since September with Pejkovic based in Sydney and Zaharakis in Queensland with the AFL hub, and then Melbourne.
But sport brought them together on Saturday where — finally in the same town at the same time — Pejkovic and Zaharakis made their public debut as a couple.
The pair attended the women’s final between Naomi Osaka and Jennifer Brady as guests of champagne house Piper-Heidsieck and watched the match with Mason Cox and Tayla Harris.
The occasional canoodle at the change of ends did not go unnoticed by others in the crowd around them.
Pejkovic, who is also a triple jumper and brand ambassador, met her beau on Instagram during last year’s COVID-19 lockdown.
And yes, he did slide into Pejkovic’s DMs to strike up a conversation with it being a post about F1 motor racing that caused him to hit send on that fateful first message.
“We were talking/FaceTiming for three months and then I flew down to meet him when borders opened,” Pejkovic said. “And now here we are.”
Pejkovic, who is based in Sydney, is a frequent visitor to Melbourne.
The athlete and fashion plate, 28, overcame a terrifying brain tumour at the age of 19.
She previously dated footballer Adam Tomlinson.
Zaharakis, 30, is Essendon’s most experienced player with 217 senior games under his belt.
