A gleaming statue of former footy great Brendan Fevola has been erected at Flinders Street Station and could become one of Melbourne’s most popular new tourist attractions.
The impressive “bronzed” or “golden” Fev in his footy gear has taken up residence outside the Clocks cafe on the Flinders Street Station concourse, directly across the road from Federation Square.
The statue, which was originally unveiled in Webb Street, Narre Warren as part of a Fox FM, Fifi, Fev and Nick breakfast radio stunt, has been homeless since early April.
The statue was unveiled on March 15 during a Fifi, Fev and Nick Brekky In The Burbs broadcast in Narre Warren – where Fev grew up – with Fevola, Fifi Box and Nick Cody believing it would be a permanent addition to the local streetscape.
However, once the trio returned from their Easter radio ratings survey break they discovered the statue had been removed by Casey Council.
“The statue – it is going along the lines of my life, I was nearly homeless at one stage – it was originally in Narre Warren and I thought it was a great achievement,” Fevola said.
“It was one of the greatest moments in my life, really, to have a statue in my honour in Narre Warren.
“People loved it. I had photos of people cleaning it with spray and towelling it down, they respected it.”
The member of the Fifi, Fev and Nick production team who arranged for the statue’s placement forgot to let on that it would only be on display for a matter of weeks.
City of Casey manager of communications and corporate governance, Chloe Casey, said the council had been delighted to be involved with the Fevola statue temporarily calling Narre Warren home, noting the activation had been a great success.
“We worked with Fox FM to make the Brekky in the Burbs event and statue unveiling possible, recognising it’s a fun and exciting opportunity for our local community to join in, as well as give exposure to Webb Street and Bunjil Place,” Ms Casey said.
“The arrangement was that Fox FM could commission a statue to be installed in Webb Street temporarily for a few weeks, with the statue taken down on Friday, April 5. Council did not make any financial contribution to the event or statue.
“It was wonderful to see so many people from the local community head to our premier entertainment precinct, Bunjil Place, to join in the fun of Brekky in the Burbs, as well as visit Fev’s statue at its temporary home in Webb Street.”
Having retrieved the statue from storage Fevola, Box and Cody set about negotiating for it to find a home in the CBD.
“We have found a new place for it,” Fevola said.
“It is going to be out the front of (the cafe) Cocks at Flinders Street opposite Fed Square.”
The Fifi, Fev and Nick show was Melbourne’s #1 FM breakfast show in the radio ratings released last week with an 11.2 per cent share of listeners.
