Western Bulldogs legend Doug Hawkins has called for Les Twentyman to be honoured with a statue in Melbourne’s west.
And he has just the place in mind for a life-size tribute to the famed social worker and advocate for underprivileged kids in the western suburbs.
“I’d like them to consider putting him in the middle of EJ and I out the front of The Braybrook Hotel,” Hawkins said.
“Les, as a Braybrook boy, what he has done not just for Braybrook but the western suburbs over 40 plus years is enormous. He was an icon of the west, he was one of us.
“I think it would be fitting if there was a statue of Les.”
Just how the statue would be funded is unclear but Hawkins said he felt it was important Twentyman was remembered for his lifetime of good work.
The statues of Hawkins and the footy great EJ Whitten were placed at the Braybrook Hotel on Ballarat Road, Braybrook in 1997.
“They kicked me out (of the pub) when I was 16 for underage drinking and then 25 years later they invited me back and put a statue of me out the front. How’s that for a turn of events,” Hawkins said.
Twentyman passed away on March 30 aged 76.
