TV legend Bert Newton is expected to remain in hospital until mid-next week as he undergoes tests.

Newton’s wife Patti said the TV legend was relaxed and taking his stay in a Melbourne hospital in his stride.

“Everything is going well and he is in good hands,” Patti said.

“He is in hospital for a bit of maintenance and a series of check-ups, as he does every year, on problems he has had in the past.”

He is expected to remain in hospital for several more days before undergoing some physical rehabilitation to improve his strength and fitness.

Newton, 82, underwent quadruple heart bypass surgery in 2012 and in recent years has had several bouts of pneumonia. He is also diabetic and is naturally cautious about his health.

Fears for Newton’s health were sparked after Patti loaded a photo of the Australian TV icon onto social media on Thursday confirming he was in hospital.

“Bert’s been in hospital, all good. He’s got a lot of living to do,” Patti wrote on the social media post, a reference to the stage musical Bye Bye Birdie.

The musical features the song ‘A Lot Of Livin’ To Do.’

Well-known entertainers including Rhonda Burchmore, Julia Morris, Silvie Paladino, Rove McManus, Jane Kennedy, Danielle Spencer, Lara Mulcahy, Amanda Harrison, John Foreman, and Emma Watkins, better known as ‘Emma Wiggle’ were among hundreds who flooded Patti’s social media account with well wishes for Newton.

Newton recently became a grandfather for the sixth time with the safe arrival of his adored grandson, Alby.

Newton’s daughter Lauren gave birth to Alby in August.

He was seven weeks premature and Lauren spent 80 days in hospital leading up to his arrival after complications put both her and Alby at risk.

Lauren and her husband, former Olympic swimmer Matt Welsh have five other children, Sam, 12, Eva, 11, Lola, 7, Monty, 4, and Perla, 1.

Alby is named after his grandfather, Bert, who is known by his closest friends as “Alby.”

“Graham (Kennedy) and Don (Lane) called him Alby,” Lauren said.

“Dad burst into tears when mum (Patti Newton) told him Alby’s name and that he had another grandson.
